W.W. Jacobs

(1863-1943)

William Wymark Jacobs is best known today for his Edwardian horror classic "The Monkey's Paw," but most of his fiction is of a decidedly humorous nature. Jacobs worked in a savings bank before publishing his first book in 1896.   His fiction always deals with sea-faring life, although it seldom follows his characters beyond the docks.  His tales are noted for their dry humor, which evoke a chuckle rather than an outright laugh, and his books have always been popular in Great Britain and the United States. His principal works of the Edwardian period include Lady of the Barge (1902), Odd Craft (1904), and Ship's Company (1911).  He was a reserved and modest individual, surprisingly in contrast to the many characters he drew with his pen.  As a fictionist, his works have often been compared to those of O. Henry.  Never very prolific, he stopped writing during the mid-1920's.  In 1931, an omnibus edition of his stories was published.
