I heard your voice today ,
Echoing from the next room.
I heard your laughter.
I knew that it was you.
Captured on a reel of film,
So many years ago.
Smiling that gentle smile,
Your face all aglow.
Memories quickly rushed back to me.
I journeyed back in time.
Wondering if deep inside you knew ,
How very hard I was trying.
I smiled for you that day Mommy.
Though my heart was breaking in two.
Now as I look back replaying that day
I am sure deep inside you knew .
Everyone said Happy 72 birthday.
Here's to another 72 more.
Yet the look on your face was somber.
As each guest walked out the door.
There wouldn't be any more birthdays.
No more gathering of friends.
No sweet thoughts or memories built
Just a broken heart to mend .
Yes, I could see it on your face
Revisiting that time now .
That deep inside
You were saying goodbye .
It was deep inside
that you cried.
I guess we smiled for each other.
Trying to give one another strength.
And how much I miss you Mommy.
How much my heart breaks.
It's so hard for me to revisit
Yet, when I hear your voice.
I rush into the very next room
It's like I have no choice.
Yet I will only find you
On a reel of tape
filled with memories.
To only be re visited.
By what is left of me.
