LINUX

Linux is an operating system just like windows or mac OSX. It is preferred to these by other users as it is very flexible and allows the user to have more control over there computer and operating system. Original called UNIX it was first developed in 1960's -1970's and was used as a research system in many universities. it then caught on to the other computer company's and more and more people started to use it as it allows much more creative control to your operating system.

Linux was then formed several years later by Linus Torvalds. He sold his idea for free in hope that people would pick up the software and expand on it. The main reasons for Linux taking off was that many computer users do not like the way in which company's such as Microsoft and IBM were dealing with the business as they where charging for software. This made alot of people angry and turned them to the free system of linux.

Linux is known for people who like to go deeper into the development and programming of the operating system. which found in the early 90's and still through to today people where becoming very cleaver with the program and generated a generation of hackers. Many hackers use the linux operating system as it makes it much harder for some one to either hack themselves or be caught hacking other peoples computers. There are many rumors and speculations that many Linux users will only hack into microsoft computers as the respect the Mac OSX operating system as it is based on the Linux operating system.

The main points why people choice Linux?

• People who already know UNIX and want to run it on PC-type hardware
• People who want to experiment with operating system principles
• People who need or want a great deal of control over their operating system
• People who have personal problems with Microsoft

 

 

Linux is becoming more and more popular with company's now making product specifically for its operating systems. Many people who are into making music are now turning to Linux with the introduction to several programs specifically for linux. There are many audio workstations which now all run using the Linux operating system. It also helps that it is part of the OSX core operating system so alot of mac users are fond of the linux operating system.The video game industry also is moving using Linux.

The playstation 3 will be running on a Linux operating system.This shows that Linux is a very flexible piece of software created by the best developers allowing a whole range of control over your operating system. I don't however believe that Linux will win in the big race as people are too familiar with Microsoft's XP operating system and like to keep it simple for there every day uses. However there is definitely enough room for other operating systems out there such as Linux and Mac OSX as they do offer a different type of system which i personnel prefer. I find the OSX operating system to be the easiest system to get around. It is defiantly user friendly and much more of a joy to get around rather than XP.
