Mar 15, 2006 - PlayStation 3 Launches Worldwide in Early November 2006

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it would launch PlayStation 3 (PS3) in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously. With a monthly production capacity of one million units, SCEI will push forward a powerful product launch to spread the platform rapidly throughout the world, together with a strong and attractive lineup of PS3 game titles. PS3 incorporates the final specifications of Blu-ray Disc (BD), and with the overwhelming computing power of PS3, it enables playback of Blu-ray software at a high bit rate. Users can also connect PS3 to high-speed broadband network through Gigabit Ethernet and comfortably enjoy a wide-range of rich and exciting content and services over the network.

Information on Blu-Ray

While the amount of storage a single layered Blu-ray disc will provide over the current DVD format is staggering, prepare to pick up your jaw off the floor. It appears in an attempt to jostle the competition, TDK has revealed plans of fabricating a monster 8 layer Blu-ray disc for commercial use.

Of course, there is also the factor of time. If it is going to take over 40 minutes to burn a dual-sided Blu-ray disc, then the estimate to burn a 200GB model would be roughly counted  to be a minimum of 160 minutes. Also, the cost of such a "miracle of technology" would presumably be astronomically high, after all, a 200gb hard drive costs 200 USD normally. And finally, the more layers you add to a disc, the higher the chance of it "coasting" ( the disc failing to burn and becoming useless). It would be awful to spend so much on one of these, only to use it as a very expensive coaster for a coffee mug.

For TDK to make this a reality, they are going to have to address some of the concerns of consumers by making it affordable, durable, and burnable at a reasonable time with a very small chance of coasting. Otherwise, TDK might find their discs sitting in stores collecting dust.

The operating system for ps3 running linux in the background enables,

- Custom Music in all games
- Simplifying development of Online games
- Seamless updating of games when connected to the Internet
- Voice Chat across all games, even outside of the games own UI
- Notifications and messaging to be sent between users regardless of the games they are playing

1.12.4.1 Will dual subs be better than 1?
Generally speaking, dual subwoofers placed under the left and right front speakers will eliminate any leaning of the low frequencies towards a single sub as well as lower the distortion thanks to increased headroom. Dual subs may also make the monitor system easier to calibrate.
