The coast of North Carolina is home to over 150 miles of barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. While the Outer Banks are a popular tourist destination today, they once struck fear into the hearts of mariners because of their treacherous coastlines. Nicknamed "The Graveyard of the Atlantic," the waters of the Outer Banks have seen over 2000 shipwrecks. Today, several of the most beautiful and well know lighthouses in the world help illuminate the coast and guide visitors safely along their way.
