DIY Computer Cable Extender

This will give you the extra length you need for your laptop, gaming system or even telephone.

Required Parts: Cat5 cable
(2) RJ45 Jacks
Wire Cutters/Strippers

Optional
Punch Tool (You can get jacks that don't require a punch tool at the link above.)

1. Cut the Cat5 cable to a little longer than the desired length.
2. Strip back roughly 3 inches of the outer jacket on either side of the cable doing your best not to nick the wires.
3. Inside you will find 4 pairs of wires with 4 predominant colors; blue, orange, green and brown. Each pair will have a mostly white striped wire and a not mostly white striped wire (predominately blue, orange, green or brown).
4. Untwist these pairs and open up the packaging for the RJ45.
5. Notice on the RJ45 there is a color code guide. Place the wires in according to this guide. You may have the option between an "A" and "B" pattern. As long as the same one is chosen on each side of the cable you are okay but the most popular option these days is "B" pattern.
6. If you have a punch tool with a "110" blade then press the tool on top of the wires with the "cut" side facing the front of the RJ45 jack. If you do not then use your wire cutters to trim up the excess wire (less than 1/16th of an inch is acceptable) and place the little plastic guide on top of the wires and press into place.
7. Repeat with the other side of the cable.
8. Ensure that each side is punched the same
Now you have an extender. All you have to do is plug in a patch cord on either side and enjoy. As an added bonus this will work with a regular telephone or even a modem cable.
