Lucas starts the episode in the shower, when abruptly the water turns off. He goes to the kitchen and asks Karen if she forgot to pay the water bill. She says no and that something must have broken. Karen then proceeds to rinse his hair off in the sink with a jug of water. Laughter ensues.

Nathan and Dan walk in the kitchen to see Deb, Nathan’s mother, back from her business trip. Dan asks, jokingly, “Who is that lady, is that my wife?”  Deb explains to the boys why she’s back early from her trip and then gives Dan a kiss. She turns to Nathan, who’s late for warm-ups, and gives him a hug before he heads out for the gym. Dan reminds Nathan about a conversation they must have had off camera, in which he told Nathan that Lucas can’t score if he doesn’t have the ball.

During the game Whitey blast the team for not playing as a team. He tells Nathan that he’s playing selfish and next time he’s on the court to pretend like they know each other. Familiar evil looks are exchanged and the team heads back on the court. While standing on the sidelines Brook asks Peyton if she can catch a ride with her to Nathan’s party later. Peyton comments that she thought she’d be hanging out in Lucas’ back seat again. Brook calls Peyton on her jealously and harmless taunts are exchanged.

Back to the basketball game, Tim is having a hard time trying to find someone whose open to pass the ball to. Having no other choice he passes the ball to Lucas, who makes the shot, and Tim is left to deal with an angry Nathan.

Nathan and Dan exchange words after the game. Dan with his usual ‘You let Lucas get the best of you!’ stare hurts a shocked Nathan. Deb attempts to pick up his dropped jaw with a “Nice game, sweetie!” Nathan then surprisingly invites a skeptical Lucas to his party at Dan and Deb’s beach house. Now the credits role!

Lucas and Haley are rolling down the street in the Scott Body Shop Tow Truck discussing why Lucas should go to the party. Lucas tells her that this is his way of standing up to Nathan and not letting him intimidate him. Haley pauses and asks Lucas if he thinks this might be Nathan was of being nice, Lucas shoots that thought down.

Peyton and Book arrive at the party, once out of the car Tim approaches Peyton telling her that she has to talk to Nathan and explain that Lucas was his only option for a clean pass in the game. The girls brush him off and notice Lucas pull up. Tim asks what’s he doing there and Nathan answers “cause I invited him,” with that oh so smug look he gives. Nathan and Lucas exchanges not so polite salutations as he passes by. Haley tries to rush past Nathan but he extends his hand and introduces himself as if they had never met.  She says she knows and that her name is Haley to which we see that ‘oh so smug smile’ again and a quick “I know.” (Plus, what I believe to be a wink.)

They all walk in the party together (Nathan, Peyton, Brook, Tim, Haley and Lucas). Lucas and Haley marvel at the house and she makes a comment about their plumbing working. Teresa, the cheerleader, walks up to Brook with their high-school newspaper and asks if she’s seen it. Brook grabs it and reads out loud from the comic strip she was referring to. The strip consists of four frames: one mocking cheerleaders, school academics, meaningless sex and putting on a fake smile. After noticing the guys in the sex frame wearing a cap comment that Brook made Nathan shoots Peyton and evil glance to which she tells everyone it’s just a stupid comic strip.

Dan passes by Nathan’s room and finds Deb staring at his stuff. She comments about how she doesn’t even know what he’s interested in besides basketball. Dan answers, “basketball.” Deb asks about how Nathan’s been doing since Lucas joined the team and they discuss the difficulties of the situation.

Back to the party Haley and Luke walk around talking about leaving the party, she wants to go and he doesn’t. Lucas walks into a small gathering that Nathan, Peyton and some of the team has made. Brook speaks first and asks Luke to come play. A friendly game of “I Never”, how interesting. Nathan’s turn comes up and he says that he’s “never had a father that wishes he was a stain on the bed sheets.” (Damn!) As you can imagine evil looks are everywhere. Lucas approaches his and says that Nathan is welcome to his, and walks away.

Peyton runs into Haley and asks, “How’s the tutoring going.” Peyton warns her to be careful when it comes to Nathan. She also promises to keep her mouth shut about the situation.

Lucas finds Haley and fills her in on the high points of his evening. Haley, who is still having a hard time believing the Nathan she knows can be so evil, tries to find some common ground between the two. Lucas gets upset with her trying not to take his side, an she walks off to head home. His yelling after he doesn’t work. As she passes by Nathan asks if she’s leaving. The slightly argue about his treatment of Lucas not having improved since last they talked.

Still wondering around determined to stick this one out, Lucas walks up on a solemn/drunk Peyton. They both proclaim they don’t care what Nathan thinks, but Lucas sees through her, Nathan’s a lurking in the background. Tim trifles through the home video stash, looking for porn, but Nathan has a better idea. He puts on an old video of Dan and Karen in their senior year. Lucas and Peyton are still out on the deck “talking”, until Lucas notices the tape. It’s sad; the tape is of Dan and Karen talking about their ‘future.’ As Lucas runs out he gives Nathan a good shove into the wall.

Nathan runs up on Haley on the docks and she tells him she’s waiting on a cab...
