Dawn was interested in art at an early age, however was
caught up in family and a series of career experiences,
Emergency and Critical Care nursing, Education, Management, and finally Counseling.
She realized her love of watercolor after retirement at age 49. In the year 2000,
she and her husband, Michael, sailed away for NJ on their 45-foot Waquiez sailboat
(Just Dessert) to begin their journey around the world. The trip has taken her throughout the
Caribbean and the islands of South America. In February 2003, they passed through
the Panama Canal and into the Pacific Ocean where they visited the Galapagos,
many South Pacific islands, and the Hawaiian Islands. Dawn is currently in French Polynesia
and hoping to spend at least 1 more year there, exploring and painting the wonderful scenes.

Books and a few valuable lessons from her brother, Richard Cobb, a retired art teacher,
helped Dawn start painting. In Trinidad, she met Andrea Clar, a professor of Art from the
University of Argentina, who was also cruising with her husband, Edwardo.
On of the interesting techniques Andrea used in her instruction was to restrict
Dawns' pallet to the three primary colors. Three years later, Dawn spent several
months in Hawaii and had the opportunity to study in a more formal setting,
advanced watercolor with Roger Whitlock, and life drawing with Chuck Davis,
through the Honolulu Academy Art Center.

The restricted primary pallet was used for all paintings between 12/01 when
Dawn studied with Andrea and approximately 10/04 when she slowly expanded,
incorporating colors from Daniel Smith. Dawn keeps the ideals of the traditional
transparent watercolorist (no white, black or other medium). In addition, all
but a few of her works are painted directly or sketched using
pale wash in lieu of pencil or charcoal.

When visiting the US, Dawn enjoys painting with her brother, Richard.
Some of these works are shown in the category of East Coast. Early paintings done in
Trinidad and the islands just north of Venezuela, and Ecuador, are shown in
location groupings. After studies in Hawaii with Roger Whitlock, Dawn revisited
some of the older subject matter with the use of her large photo file.
She notes this on the paintings as f/p (from photo). Dawn prefers
painting on site during hikes ashore or from her boat or dinghy, anchored
in picturesque bays and reefs. She hopes to continue painting on-site
as she and her husband sail "Just Dessert" westward.
