SPEED_RENT CHALLENGES
***You MUST write a new story for each challenge. Previously written stories will not be accepted.
***Unless otherwise noted, NO ORIGINAL MAIN CHARACTERS AND NO CROSSOVERS.
***Unless otherwise noted, your fic may take place pre-RENT, during RENT, or post-RENT.
CHALLENGE #1
-Your story MUST include Roger Davis.
-Your story MUST include Mark Cohen in some capacity (be it romantically or not).
-Your story MUST showcase at least TWO, NO MORE THAN FOUR of the following characters in addition to Roger & Mark:
Angel, Collins, Mark's Mother, April, Maureen, Mimi, Joanne, Roger's Mother, The Man (dealer), Benny, Paul (Life Support)
-Your story MUST include the number 24.
-Your story MUST have a surprising/shocking revelation.
-Your story MUST make mention of an airplane.
-Your story MUST make mention of Mickey Mouse.
CHALLENGE #2
-Use the prompt: Roger is somehow talked into taking a part on a television show.
-Your fic MUST include Benny.
-Your fic MUST include scenes of Roger watching himself/his show on TV.
-Your fic MUST include somebody being jealous.
-Your fic MUST make NO MENTION of Mimi
-Your fic MUST include this line "No, I don't don't know what I'm doing. But who the hell does?"
-Your fic MUST include/make mention of sewing.
CHALLENGE #3
-Use the prompt: a chance meeting.
-You may only write for TWO characters, any two characters. No other characters can make any appearance at all. (They may be mentioned, but we must never see them or hear from them.)
-Your fic MUST include a line from one of Adam Pascal’s non-RENT songs (you can find the lyrics here).
-Your fic MUST make mention of WICKED. (RENT is set before the show opened on Broadway. Play around with it. :))
-Your fic MUST NOT take place at the loft.
-Your fic MUST include this line "Merry Christmas. Now sit and tell Santa what he’s gonna have to stand in line for this year."
-Your fic MUST mention a cow.
CHALLENGE #4
-Your challenge is to write a fic based on Pat Benetar's 'Invincible'. You can listen to the song here (**Please right-click, save as.**) You can find the lyrics here. Greens has also made a video using this song (for Queer as Folk: content of video is rated R for severe language) you can find it here. (Please note. The lyrics of the song do not need to appear in your fic if you don't want them to. Your fic however must center around the general theme of the song.)
-You may write for any RENT characters. No limit.
-Your fic MUST use the line "Champagne is just ginger ale that knows somebody."
CHALLENGE #5
-Use the prompt: first times (for anything).
-You may write for any RENT characters. No limit.
-Your fic MUST include a candle.
-Your fic MUST include 'stars'.
-Your fic MUST include the number 18.
CHALLENGE #6
-Your challenge is to write a crossover between RENT and a movie that is currently or has recently been in cinemas (within the last 6 months). You may play with the time period if your crossover is in a different century/decade, etc., just as long as we clearly see the crossover.
-You may write for any RENT characters. No limit.
-Your fic MUST integrate character(s) from your crossover film. They can not simply make an appearance and then disappear. They must be in the thick of the action along with your RENT character(s). (In your DISCLAIMER, please make sure to add that you do not own this film blah, blah, blah...)
-Your fic MUST include the line "I saw this done once on an episode of Bonanza."
CHALLENGE #7
-Use the prompt: holiday shopping.
-You may write for any RENT characters. No limit.
-Your fic MUST take place in the fall.
-Your fic MUST include the line "Hey, I'm workin' inside and no one's throwin' anything at me. It's a good day!"
CHALLENGE #8
-Your challenge is to write a story about two pre-determined characters. If you are interested in writing, please respond to this post, and Greens will give you two randomly chosen characters. You must then write a fic about these characters.
-When you reply, also post a number from 1 to 8. This will determine the genre which your fic must be. (Please note that the numbers change everytime, so don't go searching the posts to find a good number. :))
-Your fic MUST include the line "So that's how that thing works!"
CHALLENGE #9
-Your challenge is a simple straight forward one: write an April death fic.
-You MUST include Roger and any other RENT characters.
-Your fic MUST include Mark's camera.
CHALLENGE #10
-Your challenge is to write a childhood fic. Pick any RENT character and show them in a point of their childhood.
-You may choose any RENT character. ORIGINAL CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED, but don't over do it.
-Your fic must go to show one thing that made the character the way we see them in the movie/show (for example: you can show why Roger loves music or why Angel is such an angel, etc.).
CHALLENGE #11
-Your challenge is to write a story that starts with Mark saying his line from the movie: "You know... there are times that we're dirt broke and hungry and freezing and I ask myself why the hell am I still living here?"
-After this line, just build off it. Simple as that.
-You may use any RENT characters you wish.
BIGGEST F***ING PRIZE CHALLENGE
-Your story MUST be AT LEAST 1750 words. More is fine, but not less.
-Your story may include any or all of the RENT characters. Original characters may be used to move your story along, but they may not have a major role.
-Your story must be based on ONE of the following prompts:
~CHARACTER 1 thinks it might be a good idea if CHARACTER 2 gets a visit from the Fab 5.
~You must open your fic with this line. "Close on Roger, who's been sitting on that window sill for days now, with a look on his face which I have become quite accustomed to."
-You must show both love and hate among your various characters (happiness, arguements, sex, fights, etc. are all allowed).
CHALLENGE #12
-Your challenge is to write a story about a made up holiday. (One of your characters has a made up holiday.)
-You may write for any RENT characters.
-Your fic MUST make clear the purpose of the holiday/it's importance to the character who created it.
CHALLENGE #13
-Your challenge is to write a story set in a hospital. The main action of your story MUST take place in a hospital.
-You may write for any RENT characters.
CHALLENGE #14
-Use the prompt: Halloween.
-You may write for any RENT characters.
CHALLENGE #15
-Your challenge is to write a missing scene fic for the movie. For those of you who don't know what a missing scene fic is, it is a story that fills a gap left by the timeline. For example, one idea might be to write a story, telling what happens while Mark is making his way to meet Joanne at the lot, or a story that shows what happened to Mark after the riot.
-You may write for any RENT characters. No original characters unless they have a minimal role to help with continuity.
-Your fic must not stray from the movie. You must end with the same outcome. For example, if you were to write a scene where Mark is on his way to Joanne at the lot, the outcome must remain the same. He helps her fix the equipment in the end, RENT life goes on as scripted. :)
CHALLENGE #16
-The events of RENT took place in 1989 and 1990. The year is now 1995. How have the lives of the characters changed? How have they stayed the same? The movie facts must remain the same. Your story must take place after the events of the movie.
-You may write for any RENT characters EXCEPT for Angel. (Angel should still be dead in your fic.)
-Your fic may focus on any RENT characters, but it MUST at least mention what happened to the other major characters. For example: you write a story focusing on Mark and Roger, you must mention where Maureen, Joanne, Benny, Collins and Mimi are, or what became of them.
CHALLENGE #17
-Your challenge is write a fic focusing solely on Benny.
-You may use other RENT characters as well. ORIGINAL CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED, just don't over do it, But remember, this story must showcase Benny.
CHALLENGE #18
-Your challenge is to write a fic based on Mimi/Angel friendship.
-This fic may take place at any point of their relationship.
-You may use other RENT characters as well. But remember, this story must be about Mimi and Angel. NO ORIGINAL CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED.
CHALLENGE #19
-Your challenge is to write a fic revolving around Maureen.
CHALLENGE #20
-Use the prompt: subway.
-You may write for any RENT characters. Also, original characters are OK but use sparingly. :)
CHALLENGE #21
-Use the prompt: pink.
-You may write for any RENT characters. Also, original characters are OK but use sparingly. :)
CHALLENGE #22
-Your challenge is write a fic where you put one of the RENT characters in therapy (think shrink :)). In therapy, your character must confront at least one thing from his/her life that causes them to be the way they are.
-Your challenge is write You may write for any RENT characters. An original character of the therapist is okay.
CHALLENGE #23
-Your challenge is to write an Angel/Mark fic. This may be a romantic fic or a non-romantic fic.
-You may write for any RENT characters. Just make sure that Mark/Angel are the focus of your story.
CHALLENGE #24
-In honor of Super Bowl Sunday, your challenge is write a fic where your characters throw a superbowl party.
-You may write for any RENT characters.
CHALLENGE #25
-Use the prompt: bar.
-You may write for any RENT characters.
