Life and Light

The current purpose of this site is to provide access to a few simple, practical spells for everyday uses for the few people who have managed to find it. I will be adding more as time goes on, so check back occasionally. Feel free to use any of them you like, but please don't republish/repost them. Thank you, I hope you find these useful on your path. Blessed Be!

*NOTE* For any of these spells you may cast a Circle if you choose, but it is not necessary. A Circle may allow you more safety and energy in your spellwork, but for a quick spell it may not be practical.

Casting a Circle
You will need:
1 green candle
1 yellow candle
1 red candle
1 blue candle
Small dish of salt (preferably sea salt)
Small bowl of water
An athame (double bladed knife), a wand, or your finger
Matches

Sit the four candles in a circle, one at each of the four cardinal directions: green at the North, yellow at the East, red at the South, and blue at the West. Bring all of the other items into the centre of the Circle (perhaps on an altar or cloth).

Light the four candles, starting with the green in the North and ending with the blue in the West. Then, take your athame, wand, or pointed finger, and walk around the inside of the Circle, starting in the North and moving clockwise, saying,

“Element of Earth, guardian of the North, I invite you to the Circle.”

As you get to each new candle, invite that element.

In the East:

“Element of Air, guardian of the East, I invite you to the Circle.”

In the South:

“Element of Fire, guardian of the South, I invite you to the Circle.”

In the West:

“Element of Water, guardian of the West, I invite you to the Circle.”

As you summon each of the elements, envision something representing them coming to the Circle and resting over each candle. For example, a bull or stag for Earth in the North, a faerie or butterfly for Air in the East, a dolphin or dragon for Water in the West, and a lion, horse, or fire-dragon for Fire in the South.

After all of the elements have been summoned, call upon the God and Goddess.

“I invoke thee, O Great Goddess: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. I invoke thee, O Great God: the Green Man, the Horned One, the Oak and Holly King.”

Picture the God and Goddess as you feel their appearance should be, not as you have been told they should be. When you feel their presence near you, consecrate the Circle by sprinkling salt and water all around inside of it, saying,

“With salt and water I consecrate this holy place. Only love may enter or leave it. So mote it be!”

Now you are ready to perform a ritual or spell.

Closing the Circle

You will need:
A candle snuffer

When your ritual is complete, you will wish to close the Circle properly. First, thank the God and Goddess for attending your ritual in your own words, then bid them farewell and visualize them leaving your presence, although they are always with you and inside of you.

Next, walk around the Circle, putting out candles (preferably with a candle snuffer), and bidding farewell to the elements, staring in the West this time and moving counter-clockwise, ending with the North.

“Element of Water, spirit of emotion and tranquility, I thank you for guarding, guiding, and protecting me during these, my rites. Blessed Be!”

“Element of Fire, spirit of power and action, I thank you for guarding, guiding, and protecting me during these, my rites. Blessed Be!”

“Element of Air, spirit of thought and intellect, I thank you for guarding, guiding, and protecting me during these, my rites. Blessed Be!”

“Element of Earth, spirit of life and protection, I thank you for guarding, guiding, and protecting me during these, my rites. Blessed Be!”

When all of the candles are out and you have envisioned the elements leaving the Circle, one by one, say,

“This magic rite is now complete, this magic Circle, now uncast. So mote it be!”

Banish Worry

You will need:

1 blue candle
2 white candles
Incense and burner (Lavender, Hyacinth, Lily of the Valley, Gardenia, Morning Glory, or Thyme are recommended, but if these are unavailable you may substitute with any scent that feels right to you)
Matches
Cauldron (if indoors)
A piece of paper and a pen with black ink

Light the white candles, which represent the God and Goddess. Also light the blue candle and the incense, which represent the calm and happiness you want to bring into your life. Meditate briefly, envisioning your life free of worries, regrets, and fears. Allow yourself to feel calm and protected: the loved child of the God and Goddess.

Take the pen and paper and write down any worries, regrets, or fears that you wish to release and be free of. Be specific, and don’t spare any details. When you have finished, fold the paper in half three times and place it in the cauldron (or a small fire, if outdoors). Light a match and place it on top of the paper in the cauldron, and as it ignites, envision what you wrote on the paper, your worries and fears, being burned out of your life and disappearing into nothing but smoke and ash (adding one or two more matches may be necessary). As you do this, say with determination,

“By the power of my Lady and my Lord, I banish thee. By the power of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, I banish thee. These fears and woes I reduce to ash, along with all regrets that have come from my past. As I have willed it, so mote it be.”

After the spell is completed, dump the ashes somewhere outside, either in grass or on bare earth – somewhere the rain will wash it away.

Banish Negativity

You will need:

2 white candles, or one silver and one gold
1 black candle (can be subsituted for a white candle with runic symbols that absorb negativity – we hope to add a section on runes eventually)
Matches
Incense (Sage, Rosemary, or Lavender preferably)
Rubbing alcohol
Cauldron (or other non-flamable container)
* a Circle is recommended for this ritual, especially if outside negative forces are involved

Light the white candles, representing the Goddess and the God, and place the black candle directly between them. This black candle will absorb any negativity, whether it be inside of you or in your environment, during this spell. Light the incense, and breathe deeply as you relax and prepare yourself for the ritual.

Envision the light from the two candles intermingling and merging, slowly spreading outward and covering you. Visualize yourself breathing the light into your body, and as you exhale, visualize black smoke, the negativity, being breathed out. As you visualize, see the black smoke gradually getting lighter and clearer as you breathe more of the light in and exhale more of your negativity. Continue this until you feel cleansed of the negativity inside of you and you see nothing but the light of purity.

Light the black candle and say,

“With this candle I light, I banish my negativity. As all negativity is absorbed, may it no longer trouble me. Let love be the power to cleanse and bless my life and surroundings. Let love be the power to protect those I love from darkness and pain. Let love be the power to destroy all sorrow and turn grief into happiness. Let love be the power to transform all things from bad to good.”

Pour about an eigth to a quarter cup (be careful! – make sure the cauldron is resting on a fireproof surface!) amount of rubbing alcohol into the cauldron, depending on its size. Light a match, and carefully drop it into the cauldron. Repeat this rhyme until the flame burns itself out.

“I now banish all that is not right. All that is evil, begone from my sight!”

Let the candle burn itself out; as it does, the negativity will melt away with the candle that has absorbed it.
