Save Concord Road

Knox Co. and the Town of Farragut are attempting to RENAME CONCORD RD. between the junction of Concord Rd. with S. Campbell Station Road and the junction of Concord Rd. with Northshore Rd., to S. Campbell Station Road. The reason given for this change is the “IMPENDING” widening of that section of Concord Rd.

WHY SHOULD WE STOP THIS:

1. It will be at least 5 years before Concord Road is widened. Concord Road is a state route (State Route 332) and is therefore controlled by the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation (TDOT). According to TDOT, Concord Rd. (SR 332) will not be widened for at least 5 years. So what is the hurry?

Now just to confuse things there is a “Concord Road Project” listed on the TDOT website but it is located in Brentwood, Tennessee, near Nashville, and has nothing to do with the Concord Rd. in Knox Co.

2. It is very unusual to change the name of a road even when segments of different roads are joined up. For example (the first two examples are located totally or partially in Farragut and there has been no attempt to “fix” them):

• Concord Road becomes West End Ave. at Kingston Pike

• Grigsby Chapel Road becomes Parkside Drive and then Parkside Drive becomes N. Peters Road

• Kingston Pike becomes Cumberland Ave.

• Henley Street becomes Chapman Highway

• Oak Ridge Highway becomes Western Ave.

Obviously it is considered less confusing and disruptive to leave the names the same instead of changing them.

3. Concord Rd. is a part of our local history. Concord Rd. has been the main route to Concord for over one hundred and fifty years, long before Farragut was even thought of. In fact, Concord Road is mentioned twice in Brig. General Robert B. Potter’s (US Army) report on the Battle of Campbell Station dated Nov. 18, 1863.1 If this section of Concord Road is renamed, then Concord Road will no longer go to Concord.
