THE HISTORY OF THE CALAHANS

THE CALAHAN CHRONICLES

'THIS FAR BY FAITH'

Researched and Written by

TERRY CALAHAN

JOHNNIE - KATIE - HUDSON

CAROLINE - REV. J.R. - SARA

The recorded history of the Calahans, started in Farmersville, Louisiana. This is the American portion of our history. However, it must be noted that our history started in Africa. It is important that our children know African Americans were stolen from Africa and brought to America as humans and then forced into slavery. The majority of our ancestors were field hands. A slave who worked in the rice and sugar fields counted themselves worse off than the slaves working in the cotton fields. On the plantation the slaves who fared best were the domestics. The 'house slaves', as they were referred to held jobs like butlers, coachmen, cooks and surrogate mothers. But however varied their location or the type of work they did, our ancestors had one thing in common, 'the constant awareness that their destiny was in the hands of the slave masters/owners. Although our ancestors were kings and queens before being stolen from Africa, in America, they were considered property. Being considered as property, they could be sold like anything else the slave owner possessed. Slavery offered no future at that time to our ancestors. Therefore, it's blighting effect made for despair and discontentment. Before 1863, our ancestors being considered property and not human beings, were not placed on most census records, therefore it is virtually impossible to accurately trace the roots of African American families to its origin. However, rest assured our Calahan ancestors lived the life of one of the before mentioned slaves described above.

The Bio of Henry Smith and Margaret Porchia Smith

Parents of Zoler Smith Calahan

Africans were brought to this area as slaves during the 1720, when a Scottish financier dispatched Europeans explorers. John Law sent explorers to Louisiana and Southern Arkansas. These explorers left the western African country of Guinea and landed in Biloxi Harbor, Mississippi. From that point these Europeans moved northwestern towards Arkansas, bringing Africans with them. As early as 1865, African American in Southern Arkansas and Northern Louisiana began to define their goals. They wanted to own land on which to farm and build good schools for their children. Farming was a major skill at that time for African Americans in Arkansas. In the late 1800’s only one in twenty African Americans farmers owned land. One of those farmers was Zoler’s father, Henry Smith. According to the 1900 census, Smith was born in 1876. Records also show, he had one brother, Chester Smith. The names of their parents have not been found. However, the name Smith has a European origin. It was brought to this country during the great migration from Europe. Researchers say, the name means “Iron Workers”. When a family in Europe worked with iron they were members of the Iron Smith Unions. If a family’s occupations was to work on wheels they belonged to the Wheelers union, and they adopted the name, Wheelers. So when the ironworkers moved to America, they in essence adopted the last name Smith. Henry Smith farmed and saved his money and married Margaret Porchia in 1897. Margaret was one of six children born to George and Fannie Porchia. George was the son of Toby and Margaret Porchia. According to the 1900 census, Toby was born in slavery in 1874. He was considered property of John Dawson of Buena Vista, Arkansas. Henry and Margaret had twelve children, Letha, Dimmer, Eva, Leola, Chester, Albert, Clara, Lucille, Flemmon, L.G. and twin daughters, Zoler and Nora Smith.
