GM: Last time we left off, you just finished conducting a raid on a Thiewar prisoner which housed the half brother of Arman Kharas, named Pick.
Arman Kharas: We are still deep within Thiewar territory... Keep your guard up as they surely know that we are here now.
Arman Kharas looks back at the battle that occured at the prison before turning to look over the group.
Taurus 'covertly' eyes the dwarves, never having seen such a creature in the flesh before and now having the time to do so. Nodding to Aman Kharas he glances around at his companions.
Taurus: Perhaps we should expodite our exodeus.
Arman Kharas: follow me!
Vexin Sixtoes bounces along behind Arman
Arman Kharas does not wait for a response and rushes off down a side street
Taurus steps in toe whilst his sword sheathed his hand not far from its pommel.
Vexin Sixtoes (sings): Following the leader, the leader, the leader!
Taurus: Prince Arman. Do the Thiewar capture your kin often?
You follow Arman and his small band of Hylar warriors. Pick and the other prisoners are in tow. Arman slows down from time to time at wide avenues, looking around for ambushers. When he feels the way is safe, he carries on down the winding streets of North Gate.
Vexin Sixtoes happily peeks around corners and searches dark alcoves for trouble
Arman Kharas: straight ahead, across this street is a lift. That will take us to the second level of North Gate. Once we are up on the second level, we will be faced with a great deal of adversaries.
Zhage follow behind everyone cautiously..
Taurus: Are the captives capable of defending themselves?
Vexin Sixtoes: What kind of adversaries? Dragons?!?!
Arman Kharas: if we should encounter any resistance, it is imperative that we dispatch it quickly and continue to move. if we do not keep moving, they will surely over come us.
Pick: We have little in way of weapons, and we are quite weak from our ordeal. But we will fend off any attackers that should stand in our way...
Arman Kharas nods to pick with a proud twinkle in his eye.
Taurus: Aye, we'll take care of ambushers. You ensure you protect your wounded and sick.
Eben: First things first though... Lets get to the lift.
Eben points across the wide open street
Arman Kharas: follow me.
Vexin Sixtoes: Aw, just more dwarves?
Vexin Sixtoes steps in front of Arman, waves, then, bones cracking, shifts back into Leopard form (2nd/day)
Arman Kharas pumps his legs high as he sprints across the street. His armor jinggles and his his warhammer clanks against his hip
Zhage looks at the former prisoners.
Taurus looks up and down the street.
Zhage: Can any of you use a crossbow?
Taurus: Move out.
Leopard (Vexin) easily keeps up, merely walking to keep up with the running dwarves
Taurus steps in toe as he moves it across the street.
as you cross, you see down the far end of the street a huge band of Thiewar dwarves marching toward you. They see you running and they pick up their pace in a fast pursuit, yelling blood curdelling battle screams toward you and your group
Zhage: Looks like we have company..
Eben mutters under his breathe as he looks over his shoulder at the Thiewar
Taurus: Aye! They don't appear too negotiable neither.
Arman Kharas (breathing hard): We are almost at the lift. They will not pose a threat. Hurry!
Arman Kharas Rounds a cornor and just 50 feet away, you see a large platform that has chains on the four cornors rising up into a shaft in the ceiling.
Arman Kharas stops short of the lift and directs everyone on to the large platform
Taurus steps onto the platform, anxiously resting his hand on the pommel of his sheathed longsword. Eyeing the corner they just rounded, knowing any minute a pack of dwarves will be rounding it looking for blood.
Leopard (Vexin) pounes on the lift and snaps around, facing the oncoming Theiwar
Zhage moves onto the lift waiting for the enemy to appear.
Once everyone is on board, Pick pulls the leaver and the lift lurches it's way upward. As the lift gets about 10 feet into the air, a pack of pale skinned dwarves, armed to the teeth race around the cornor. Some hurl their weapons toward you but they all fall short
Taurus: What kind of resistance can we expect on the next level?
Taurus: More Thiewar?
Arman Kharas looks at Taurus with a serious face
Arman Kharas: they're main force will be housed on the second floor...
Leopard (Vexin) purrs
Taurus: I see. Perhaps we should disable the lift to make it difficult for those below to persue?
Arman Kharas: There will be little time to do so. It will be a running battle to the next lift. Once we get to it, we will be safe. Speed is the key...
Taurus: Aye.
Zhage: Do you think you can be quick Taurus?
Taurus: I can make it.
Zhage: Are you sure?
Taurus: Aye. It'll be a hard jog, but I'll manage.
Zhage: Ok..
Leopard (Vexin): I must have used a Bite spell
The lift continues to rise for some time when finally it crests over the lip of the shaft revealing the second floor. Before the lift even stops, Arman steps off and runs off down the passageway.
Taurus steps off the lift and runs down the passageway after Arman. Keeping an eye on the recently rescued prisoners as they move, somewhat surprised by their hardiness.
Zhage follows behind/
Taurus: Zhage, you have enough firepower for a few large groups?
Zhage: Some..
Taurus: We might need it...
Zhage: But I think I have a new spell that may work in this situation..
Leopard (Vexin) circles the group as they run
Arman leads the way down the twisting streets. There does not seem to be any signs of any Thiewar, but Arman continues to move at remarkable speed. As the goup runs down the street, a volley of bolts from dwarven crossbows whistle past you, clanking against the cobblestone and lodging themselves in window shudders and crates that line the street.
Arman Kharas: THIEWAR!
Taurus: Take cover! incoming!
Taurus lifts his shield, batting away a stray bolt as it scrapes across the already scarred metal surface.
you see, emerging from rooftops and every alley and street on the area, the well armed forces of the Thiewar, and they seem intent on stopping you at all costs
Gilthanas runs forward, just rushing past many of the dwarves that are emerging from side doors and alleyways.
Eben also gets a jump on the dwarves, keeping pace with the swift elven prince
Many of the Thiewar stride out into the street at many points. From alleys, and doorways. Some intercept the quick moving Eben and Gilthanas while others move in to stop the others. Many crossbow man that are scattered across the rooftops fire off arrows. It seems like a large a large volley is sent to thewards the enemy... you.
A bolt thumps into Zhage's shoulder while a few others clatter all around the young mage
Zhage winces in pain, as he looks at the bolt.
Taurus peers over to Zhage.
Taurus: Zhage! Keep close, I'm making a hole.
Many of the bolts clatter around Tierwester. The warlock manages to avoid the missles.
Zhage nods
Bolts clatter off of Taurus' armor and shield but one bolt ploughs throw the brestplate, and plunges into the knights chest. It miraculously misses any vital organs
Taurus cries out, critting his teeth and does his best to ignore the pain.
The leopard is nimble and dodges the barrage of bolts that come soaring his way, but the amount that has been sent his way, he cannot avoid them all. One lucky shot pierces the lepoard's flank
Bolts soar in on top of Eben and Gilthanas. Gilthanas manages to avoid the enemy fire, but Eben is struck in the shoulder
Taurus
Taurus tries to regulate his breathing as he runs through the streets in his heavy armor; not wanting to exhaust himself too early. As the dwarves come out, so does his sword. Using it to fend off blows left and right as he pushes right past.
As the knight pushes past the dwarves, many swing at him with their axes, trying to fell the warrior
The axes smash against the knight's armor and shield but none seem to break through his defenses. He does notice, however, many new scrapes and dents hammered into his ornate armor
Tierwester
Taurus: Cursed dwarves!
Tierwester blasts a dwarf with his magical force as he runs foeward
Taurus grits his teeth as he grunts, taking serveral heavy blows against his armor as he forces his way past them. Adjusting his stance somewhat to deflect the high angle attacks from the shorter foes.
The dwarf collapses in a heap and even as the body falls to the ground, you see another dwarf lurking in the doorway, waiting to take his fallen comrade's place
As the warlock runs past, a few dwarves strike out at him
One of the attackers cuts his axe deep into Tierwester's torso. He grits his teeth in pain but continues to rush forward
Arman runs forward, knocking his shoulder into the Thiewar that try to stop his advance
Arman manages to block the incoming attacks
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) growls out the incantaion for Body of the Sun, and stalks forward
Skitters follows his master's every move, restraining himself from sating his thirst
As Skitters and Vexin press forward, flames lick up off their bodies and blast out toward the enemy. The dwarves scream in pain as their skin is scorched. Many Thiewar collaps to the ground, temporarily clearing the way for those behind the two flaming animals
Zhage
Zhage casts mage armor upon himself and moves forward with the flaming animals.
Gilthanas Puts his arms up to push his way through the sea of dwarves that are flooding into the street, trying his best to avoid any attacks.
Eben follows the elf, seeing more dwarves coming into the street ahead, behind, and all around
The Thiewar hack at the two as they pass but manage to miss.
Three dwarves rush to catch up to the Leopard and Zhage as more flood in from open doorways. Two attack Vexin while one squares off with Zhage.
The dwarfs attack the leopard and miss but the one on Zhage cuts his axe into the mage's forearm
Zhage grunts a little and tries to fend off the attacking dwarves.
4 dwarves move in to attack Taurus with their axes while another 4 advance towards Arman
One of the dwarven axes bites into Taurus' thigh.
As Arman rushes forward, three of the axes find their mark, hacking into the dwarven prince's flesh. He winces in pain, but does not cry out
Many dwarves rush forward toward Eben and Gilthanas but only one makes it in time to swing
The axe hits it's mark, drawing blood from Gilthanas' elbow
A new volley of bolts are fired down into the street.
One bolt cuts into Zhage's shoulder while the rest bounce off his shimmering magical armor
A bolt piercies the skin of the warlock. He grunts in pain as it grazes his neck
Zhage cries out in pain, starting to look a little weak,
Many bolts clatter around the leopard but one strikes true, hitting him in the hind leg, lodging itself halfway through
The bots clatter against the knight's armor but none find a weak spot in the defenses
The bolts continue to soar all around Eben, Gilthanas, Arman and Skitters, but luckly, only one strikes eben in the bicep.
Taurus
Taurus lip curls back silencing a cry as blood trickles down his leg. Shooting a glare at the dwarf that attacked him but not retaliating; instead he hefts his shield high and forces his way through once more drawing their attacks. (full def + 1 move: AC27)
Taurus: Move in on my position!
Arman Kharas: We must make it to the lift!
Tierwester
Tierwester, seeing what the two flaming creatures can do, defends himself for a short while, waiting for them to clear a path
Arman advances towards Taurus, he does not look happy about waiting, but is willing to see what the knight has planned
Even with his defenses up, a couple of the Thiewar manage to break through, striking at Arman as he advances
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) stalks forward, wading through dwarf bodies with Skitters, clearing a smoldering swath of stinking flesh
Leopard (Vexin) roars in Tierwester and Zhage's direction, hoping they'll get the drift and sprint forward
three dwarves attack both Skitters and Vexin as they advance forward.
The attacks all miss as they yell out in frustration
Tierwester rushes forward with Vexin
Like their previous victums from down the street, this batch of dwarves are cooked to Vexin's liking... well done, with a slight hint of Burnt!
Zhage
Leopard (Vexin) roars mightily at Zhage, nipping at his heels
Zhage follows Vexin once again.
Zhage then points his staff at himself and looks a little satisfied.
Gilthanas looks back to Taurus
Taurus: Keep pushing forward Gilthanas!
Gilthanas nods and moves forward, Eben in tow
The dwarves hack at Gilthanas and Eben
An axe grazes past Gilthanas' cheek. He's able to swing his head back moments before the axe would have cleaved off his face
The Thiewar rush forward in an effort to catch the leopard
six dwarves decend upon the leopard.
Despite the leopard's best efforts, he manages to dodge all but two lucky strikes.
Two dwarves rush to the knight and attack
The knight skillfully defends his position.
4 dwarves attack Gilthanas while another 3 attack Eben
An axe strikes the elf in the leg as he runs past
Eben fends off the three dwarves with a flurry of parries and nimble dodges
The arrows that have flooded the street continue to greet you as you push your way down the street
The bolts soar toward Zhage, most miss completely while one bounces off his face. It is just natural to flinch, but it does not draw blood.
Zhage shakes his head and smiles.
The barrage of crossbow bolts fills the street with missed shots and near hits. One strikes Arman in the shoulder while another glances across Gilthanas' wrist
Taurus
Taurus hefts his shield eye, concentrating on defending himself before he moves his fist across his holy symbol. Speaking in a deep voice a shimmer comes over him. (Magic Circle vs evil: everyone within 10ft get +2AC)
As Taurus advances, and moves his fist over his holy symbol, an axe slashes into his shoulder
Tierwester
Arman makes his way forward with Taurus
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) bats at Zhage and Tierwester's ankles, urging them to move faster, yet stays behind with Skitters to cover their advance.
Leopard (Vexin) casts Lesser Vigor on himself and shares with Skitters
The dwarves in around Vexin and Skitter burst into flames but they do not collapse. They look badly burned however
Zhage
Zhage moves forward to join Taurus.
Three dwarves swing at the mage as he rushes to the Knight's side
Taurus: Follow my lead. We'll move in waves. Short then long, then short and then long again.
Zhage nods at Taurus.
One of the attacks barely misses as the mage runs forward.
Tierwester
Tierwester runs forward with Zhage as three dwarves attack him as well
Gilthanas elbows past the Thiewar. Eben follows
4 dwarves attack Gilthanas while 3 attack Eben
two axes hack into the elf while one slashes across eben's arm
Gilthanas staggers against a wall as he pushes past. He sees the street ahead is clear and presses on, barely able to walk straight
More Thiewar emerge from the building up ahead.
The 6 scorched dwarves try to finish the leopard off
All the attacks miss as Vexin weaves throught the army of dwarves
The thiewar that had attacked Gilthanas and Eben begin to give chase but decide to stop Taurus, Arman, Tierwester and Zhage's advance, having faith that the crossbowmen will finish the elf and human off
The bolts continue to litter the street and two strike their intended victims. Skitters and Vexin both ares struck by the bolts
Taurus
Taurus takes a defencive stands beside Arman; just slightly infront of Zhage. Reaching out to his mage friend he calls on the divine righteousness of Kiri-Jolith to heal his wounds beforepushing forward.
Zhage nods towards Taurus, as he pulls the bolt from his shoulder.
Taurus: Next is a long push; we need to relieve Gilthanas and Eben.
Arman moves forward with Taurus
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) makes a full "retreat" forward with Skitters to catch up
The dwarves that Vexin and Skitter rush away from attack as the flee but they all miss in their efforts to down the two
Zhage
Zhage moves forward with Taurus.
Zhage chants and lets loose a bolt of lightning towards the dwarves to his front.
Sparks launch from Zhages hands as lightning blasts through the seven dwarves (sleepy, grumpy, dopey, snoopy, happy, lucky, and chatty dwarf) and they fall to the ground in a heap
Taurus: Nice fire Zhage!
Taurus: Its almost clear.
Zhage Nods to Taurus, looking a little tired.
Tierwester
Tierwester moves forward and launches his blue energy off at one of the dwarves ahead
Taurus: Gilthanas and Eben defend your positions!
The dwarf lights up in blue light as his teeth rattle, he falls to the ground
Eben Nods to Taurus, looking at Gilthanas with concern
The dwarves up the street rush forward while the ones behind move closer to the rear guard
One dwarf advances in on Arman while the other attacks Skitter
Both attacks miss
The barrage of bolts from the dwarven crossbow men clatter against armor and shield while others thud into walls. The dwarves shout curses at you. You hear, from one of the roof tops, the sound of a deep, rumbling horn
Taurus
Zhage looks a little concerned about the sounding hron
Taurus bounds forward in all the glory of his fullplate, his hand lighting up as he covers the distance between him and Gilthanas quickly and places the glowing gauntlet on the elven prince; intentionally distracting the dwarves near his companions as he passes
The dwarves take the bait and attack the knight. One axe strikes the knight in the back but does not slow him down
Taurus back arches but he does not loose his footing, eyes narrowing in concentration to focus on the task at hand.
Gilthanas' wounds close shut, leaving only a few minor scrapes. He straightens up and becomes more aware of his surroundings. He grips his sword tight and prepares for the advancing dwarves.
Arman lunges forward after Taurus, his feet not able to carry him quite as far
Taurus: Show me some of that elven blade skill, friend.
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) bats at the nearest dwarf, then lunges forward to protect Zhage and Tierwester as they advance
Zhage
Zhage looks back quickly, then moves forward with Vexin.
Tierwester
Tierwester follows Zhage and Vexin's lead
Gilthanas and Eben both wait for the dwarves to come within range before they attack
Both the warrior's blades plunge into the Thiewar's body. He slides off the blades and slumps to the street
THe rest of the dwarves run toward the group, wielding thier weapons with menace.
The bolts do not let up and continue to pepper the street.
The bolts scatter all over the street. One grazes Vexin while two more puncture Taurus' armor.
Taurus: Break for the lift! I'll take the rearaggh!
Taurus
Taurus places his hand over one of the wounds, forcing the bolts out. Stepping forward more slowly this time but keeping his guard high.
Taurus: Tauru
Taurus: move move move!
Arman pushes past and heads toward the lift
The Thiewar hack away at Arman but they miss the dwarf prince
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) breaks away and charges the last visible ranks of dwarves barring their way to the lift
In unison, Skitters and Vexin leap on each dwarf, flaring up into flames while attacking with tooth and nail. The two dwarves fall lifeless to the bloody, crossbow bolt ridden street
Zhage
Zhage moves forward behind Taurus. Stopping, he chants. Bones begin to crack and pop as a low shriek escapes Zhage's lips.
Taurus looks to Zhage with concern.
Skitters howls
Taurus: ...Zhage?
Zhage (Lion Form) lets loose a thunderous roar.
Taurus eyes widen.
Tierwester
The warlock rushes forward
Gilthanas and Eben rush forward towards the lift.
Taurus: Double move it comrads! We'll have more on us any minute now!
Four dwarves cautiously attack the lion that stands before them, while another attacks Taurus
One of the dwarves strikes the lion across the nose with the flat of the axe.
The rest of the half-burnt and charred dwarves hurry forward to help bring down the lion.
Taurus
Taurus keeps his defence intact as he makes a healing withdrawal. heh
Arman runs forward leading the way towards the lift
Vexin Sixtoes
Leopard (Vexin) tires to rouse the dwarves to strike for better pay
Leopard (Vexin) saunters forward with Skitters, snarling at the avancing horde
the dwarves attach their picket signs to the ends of their axes, some with a picture of Vexin (in Leopard form) with "Vexin for union president!" written underneath
Zhage
Zhage (Lion Form) looks at the advancing hoard, roars and makes a tactful exit with Vexin.
THe dwarves fight over trying to get a postion to attack the lion.
The lion leaps up over the heads of the dwarves surrounding him, all miss the lion
Tierwester
Tierwester rushes forward as a dwarf strikes out at him
Taurus pants heavily as he comes to the lift, his armor and blood making him look like a bashed crab. He peers at the approaching dwarves as they begin to accend on the lift.
Taurus: That.. *pant* was.. *pant*.. close
Taurus: Nice *pant* work..
You all press on to the lift, the dwarves bolts whistle by as the ones on the street level with you give chase. Arman shifts the lift into gear as it lurches upward, leaving the Thiewar and North Gate behind you
Taurus eyes the Lion warily.
Zhage (Lion Form) stretches and licks his paws.
Taurus takes a moment as he catches his breath to assess his companions wounds; and the dwarves. Attempting to determine who would benefit most from the touch of the gods.
Arman Kharas Rests as he leans against one of the chains that pulls the lift upwards
Leopard (Vexin) licks his wounds and cocks his head at Zhage
It looks as though Eben and Arman are both the most injured but the wounds don't look too severe
Zhage (Lion Form) looks back at the leapord.
Taurus watches Vexin slowly healing on his own and turns to Eben, placing his hand on his shoulder and giving it a squeeze and a smile; a look of congratulations.
Eben nods to Taurus with a grin, sharing the congratulations with him
Taurus says a quiet prayer and cures Eben of some of his wounds. Then he turns to Arman.
Taurus: Prince Arman, would you allow me the honor...?
Taurus holds out his gauntletted hand.
Arman Kharas raises an eyebrow to the out stretched gauntlet.
Taurus: Your wounds, may I tend to them? I am a... medic... of sorts.
Taurus: It shall only take a moment.
Zhage (Lion Form) lays down on the lift, watching Taurus.
Arman Kharas raises his chin as he regaurds the knight for a moment
Arman Kharas: aye... I think I know what you are.
Arman Kharas squints as he looks Taurus over
Taurus: Aye, I am Solamnic.
Arman Kharas grins slightly
Arman Kharas: not that, lad.
Taurus grins somewhat.
Taurus: May I?
Arman Kharas nods and steps forward
Taurus places his hand against Arman's shoulder, then grips a bolt with his other hand. As he pulls it out, he lets the light wash over the wound.
Arman Kharas touches the shoulder where the wound once was, just seconds ago.
Taurus releases Arman and steps back, leaning against a chain himself having caught his breath. He peers around the great cavern they ascend through.
Arman Kharas looks up at Taurus and stares at him for a short second or two. He nods and returns to his position near the chain
Taurus: We will need help Arman.
Taurus: Convincing your father to allow refugee's in his great halls...
Arman Kharas: aye. It won't take much to convince my father, but the other Thanes...
Arman Kharas pauses and lets his words trail off
Taurus: Then we shall have to show them the light.
Taurus nods firmly.
The lift lurches to a halt and you see that you are now on another floor. The streets here look much the same as the ones below, but it looks even more deserted.
Zhage (Lion Form) cautiosly peers about.
Arman Kharas: Come this way, lads. If we move quickly, we can reach the Life Tree of Hylar in a few hours
Taurus looks around half expecting to be facing off with more dwarves. He steps off the platform and nods to Arman.
Taurus: Aye, lets move out.
Leopard (Vexin) pounces forward
Zhage (Lion Form) lifts up on his haunches and reverts back to his human form.
Arman leads you through the similar streets of the abandoned dwarven city. You can tell that Arman and his dwarven troops are far more relaxed, even to the point of looping their weapons in their sheaths.
Taurus: I did not know you possessed such powers as Vexin, Zhage.
Zhage: Well... that was an experience..
Taurus: The arcane is truly a wonderous thing.
Zhage: I just thought of that spell a short time ago.. It is not as long lasting as Vexin, but it can still help out in a pinch.
Taurus: Can you turn only into felines?
Zhage: No..
Taurus: I'm afraid I'm somewhat niave to magics; where I come from it was not so verilant.
Zhage: The lion was the first thing that came to my mind.
Taurus: A proud beast.
Zhage: I think next time I'll try something a little.. bigger..
Zhage: and possibly red.
Taurus: I'll cannot wait.
Eben: I would have thought you'd go for a bald eagle?
Eben eben points to Zhages bald scalpe
Taurus eyes Eben, then Zhage, then Eben again somewhat confused.
Zhage laughs a little.
Zhage: Maybe if we ever need a scout in an open area.
Taurus: Oh I see..
Taurus laughs a little, not overly certain however.
Taurus: Perhaps even a huge pack mule.
Taurus adjusts the weight on his shoulders, grunting some.
Taurus: Do your share of lugging this around, eh?
Taurus grins.
Zhage: Talk to vexin.. he may be able to do a mule.
Zhage smiles a bit.
Taurus laughs
After a long hike through the empty streets, you see up ahead a large, massive gate set into a fantastic archway. Even though the area has clearly not been looked after, the architecture is in near pristine condition
Taurus quietens as he sees the gate ahead obviously impressed. He looks to Arman.
Taurus: This is the entrance to your halls?
Arman Kharas shakes his head
Arman Kharas: this is the gate to the Second Road of Thanes.
Taurus: I see. Please, lead the way.
Leopard (Vexin) bites Taurus' hand after the pack mule comment
Arman Kharas: It will take us to the city of Thiebarden. There, we can get a barge to the Life Tree
Taurus gives Vexin a little scratch behind the ear ;)
Taurus: Barge?
Arman Kharas: aye, the Life Tree of Hylar is on the far side of the Urkan Sea
Taurus: T.. there is a whole sea? under the mountain?
Taurus: What wonders this place has. It is as if another world..
Arman Kharas: it is probably not as large as what you surface dwellers are used to, but it is large. over 4 miles across.
Taurus nods though still quite obviously impressed.
The road leads through the mountain for a great distance. You see that even though you are within a giant network of caverns, a strange moss grows on the ceiling casting everything in a dim glow.
Zhage: Interesting moss..
Taurus seems fairly chatty with the Dwarves, fairly interested in this place. Asking all manner of questions, such as food sources for the dwarves, about the moss and also about the air and how they get it fresh.
on either side of the road, you see small farms. These farms are not entirely similar to those back in the Seeker lands except that the plants here are like none other you have seen. You still notice that even though there are farms here, it does not look like there are a great deal of dwarves inhabiting these areasa
Arman Kharas tries to answer all of Taurus' questions, explaining how the economic structure as well as the agricultural structure works here in Thorbardin
Taurus: It is amazing the differences between our societies, and the similaries. I remember when I was a child I was told stories that you dwarves would harvest the rocks of the cavern walls and eat them - which was why you were so strong and drank lots of ale.
Taurus laughs.
Zhage listens in on the conversation and drops in a few odd questions here and there.
Arman Kharas laughs at Taurus' comment, happy to explain anything he can to you. When Zhage pipes up with questions, he address them with the same courtesy that he has given to the knight
You walk on for a few miles and come upon a cross road. Arman begins to head in the direction you had been going.
Pick: Arman, your not going that way, are you?
Arman Kharas: it is the fastest way to the Life Tree of Hylar, brother.
Taurus nods and listens to Zhage's questions, smiling some as it seems oddly peaceful at the moment. Glancing to Vexin who hasn't said a word for a few hours. Distracted by Pick he looks between the two brothers.
Taurus: What is wrong with this path?
Pick: But that takes us into Theibardin. It is a Theiwar settlement. It is a Theiwar stronghold. I need not tell you what the concequences for entering their territory will be...
Arman Kharas scratches his bearded chin and looks down the road that crosses paths with this one.
Leopard (Vexin) purrs at Taurus, then saunters forward to scout the indicated path
Arman Kharas: if we take the sixth road, it will take at least another 3 hours to get to the Life tree...
Taurus: Perhaps Pick you might take the rest of the prisoners the safer route? It is very important that we reach the Life Tree as soon as possible.
Pick: three hours is nothing compared to a life time taken away from us in death...
Taurus: Many lives depend on it.
Pick: I do not doubt your poweress in battle, sir Taurus. You AND your companions are skilled warriors. But if you believe that the Northgate was difficult, this will be hundreds of times worse.
Taurus nods slowly, looking between the pair.
Taurus: I will leave this up to your disgression as you know the area much better than we.
Taurus: I would not wish to jeapodise our mission out of impatiance nor more than waste vital time.
Arman Kharas (regretably): My brother is right. if these people are depending on you, we should not risk going through Theibardin...
Taurus: Aye. Let us continue the longer path.
Taurus: Tell me, have your kin and the Theiwar always been at conflict?
Arman Kharas slouches slightly, almost as if he is pouting that he does not get to see battle with the Theiwar.
Taurus smiles a little.
Taurus: Arman, you may wish to save your strength for a more worthy foe. Did you know that Draconians are defiant even in death, they explode or turn to stone trapping your weapons.
Pick: it is true. The feud between the dark dwarves and our kin have been going on for centuries. Even though we share a seat with them in the House of Thanes, outside of those politics, it is pretty much war.
Arman Kharas: hmmm... how fasinating... I have not heard of these "Draconians".
Taurus: It is a shame that hostilities such as this exist between brothers.
Taurus goes on to tell Arman about the Draconians, and the dragon armies, as they walk. His view on them more militaristic; explaining their flaws, strengths and tactics.
Pick: They have turned their backs on all that is good in the world. The seek to wrest control of Thorbardin and drive us out. It is a delicate balance right now.
Taurus: Though they may not look it they are quite bright, cunning, devious creatures.
Arman Kharas: They seem to be worthy foes, indeed. I do not wish these dragon armies to be set upon my kin, but we will fight, if need be!
Taurus: My heart lightens at those words.
The road carries on for some time before it opens up into a large cavern, miles and miles wide and even longer. Arman explains that this cavern is called the West Warrens.
Here, you see that crops are cultivated, and lovestock are tended by another dwarven clan called the Klar. They're appearence are similar to the Hylar but they seem to be more hardy and stocky, even for your average dwarf.
Taurus: Does a lot of trade occur between clans? At least those not hostile to one another?
Arman Kharas: Aye. We trade extensively with other clans that are not hostile.
Great crystal shafts allow light to travel from the mountain side down into the natural cavern, and expertly engineered aqueducts channel water down through the massive cavern. To outsiders, the West Warrens almost feel as though you are above ground until you notice the lack of wind in your faces and the sky not being above your heads.
Taurus: It would appear there is plenty of room here.
Fields of corn and wheat linr the floor, and massive mushrooms tower like trees. Small shaggy oxenm sheep, and goats can be seen grazing in elaborate pens. Klar farmers riding in wagons pulled by stunted ponies and urkhan worms can be seen in the distance.
The Klar farmers wave to you as you pass and look on with curiousity.
Taurus: My companions and I have collected many items of great power during our journey here. We would be willing to trade them, should your kin be interested. I cannot speak for the others but I know my armor is going to need some work...
Taurus looks on the strange beasts and mushrooms with the same curiousity the Klar look on them. Meeting the gaze of some he politely inclines his head in greetings though does not spare the time to stop.
Arman Kharas: When we reach the Life Tree, you will be taken care of. You will have time to rest and make trades with our merchants if you so desire.
Taurus: Thank you...
Taurus: Though I must assure you, our priority is to secure the safety of those under our charge.
You cross the West Warrens in an hour or so and come across another great gate. here, some Klar dwarves stand guard. They see Arman and the other Hylar and nod to you as you pass. Beyond the gate lies another road.
Arman Kharas: at the end of this road, we shall enter Theiwarin. It was once a Theiwar controled city, but it is no longer. There we will find safe passage to the Life Tree.
Taurus nods slowly.
After a long trek down the road, you come upon another gate. You pass through unhindered. Here lies another dwarven city, but this one has a bit more life to it. The population here still seems sparse than what you would imagine, but at least there are dwarves walking about the streets like any other surface city.
Taurus: Tell me Arman, have your people always been so scarce? I cannot help but notice there are more buildings than there are dwarves. Have the wars between your kin really been so devistating?
Arman Kharas looks to you with an intensity that you have not seen in the dwarf since you met.
Arman Kharas: the fighting has been bad to the point that our numbers have dewindled... and also... when we closed our gates to the outside world... Our Nieder cousins became trapt outside. Our populations where cut by over a quarter almost instantly at that moment in time.
Taurus: I can see it has been hard on you. Perhaps it is the time for change and once again the sound of laughter will fill your streets.
Arman Kharas nods with a solmn look on his face. He continues to walk further into the dwarven city.
Arman leads you through the city and to the far side You soon come upon a dock that looks out over a vast sea. Your attention is drawn to an amazing sight: The Life Tree of Hylar. The Life Tree is truly one of the wonders of the world. It is an immense stalactite, half a mile high at the and as wide at the top.
Taurus peers out across at the Stalactite, going silent in awe for a long minute.
Pick: there, brother! We can get passage on that cable-boat!
Arman Kharas: Ah, there you have it. Come, this way.
Taurus nods and hurries along.
Arman leads you onto a cable-boat. It is a forty foot wooden vessel with a mast that does not carry a sail; rather, it is attached to a cable that is suspended above the waterline to keep the boat on course.
Taurus stands at the edge of the dock and peers down into the water; obviously uncomfortable.
Taurus: So... cable boat is the only way across?
At the rear of the boat, you see a dwarf maning the propoltion system. A huge catfish is harnessed to the boat and responds to the drivers orders. the fish are over 15 feet long, but they are quite gentle. They move slowly and deliberately.
Arman Kharas: nah. see there. other boats go from place to place by ores and others are pulled by fish. this is the best way to go, however. very safe.
Zhage: Just stay away from the side Taurus... We know how much you like water..
Taurus: I see. I havn't had much... luck... travelling over water. I tend to sink like a rock.
Taurus nods to Zhage.
Arman Kharas looks to Zhage.
Taurus steps onto the boat, moving to the center as close as he can.
Leopard (Vexin) seems to laugh/growl at Taurus
Arman Kharas: he'll be fine! This is sturdy dwarven engineering!
Zhage: Atleast, if you do happen to fall in, I have some spells ready to help you get out..
As you board, you hear one of the crew mutter something in dwarven and then he tosses a mushroom over the side.
Taurus looks at the dwarf curiously before sitting, looking back to Zhage. Offering him a smile, though somewhat of an unsure smile. He peers at the dark water nervously.
Zhage laughs at the uneasy Taurus
Leopard (Vexin) srcatches the word Lylya into the wood floor
Leopard (Vexin) scratches an arrow from the word to the sailor
Leopard (Vexin) nudges Arman, and growls at thescratchings
Zhage nods towards Vexin.
The cable-boat rocks slightly as it floats off along the cables towards the Life Tree
Arman Kharas: huh?
Arman Kharas reads the scratch
Taurus grabs the mast.
Arman Kharas: oh, by Rerrox's beard, pay no heed to that one!
Leopard (Vexin) sits on his haunches and growls softly, cocking his head
Arman Kharas (sighs): It's an old superstitious ritual to appease a creature they call Lylya. The legend is suppose to say that Lylya is a giant dragon turtle that is rumored to live in the sea. It is only a myth. don't mind this superstious lot!
Taurus looks up and towards Arman as he explains to Vexin the story of Lyla. He smiles some, the story taking his mind off the water.
Leopard (Vexin) grins and peers into the waters, trying to get a glimpse of Lylya
Taurus: It is not unlike those above ground. I remember on my journey from Solamnia sailors would light a shrine and incence to honor a vengeful goddess of the sea.
The boat ride does not take too long, and soon it the cable-boat is docked at the tip of the Life Tree of Hylar.
On this side of the dock, the previous perspective of Thorbardin's scarse population is no where to be seen. The docks are cloged with dwarves of all clans. They load cargo on and off of boats while others make their way towards many entrances that are at the tip of the stalactite
Taurus is the first off the boat.
Taurus: This place is the center of your empire?
Zhage (jokingly): Did I accidently cast haste on you Taurus? I think that was the fastest I have seen you move.
Taurus: Aerr... yeah... I don't exactly have 'sea legs' as one would say.
You see that the outside of the Life Tree has a very decorative coral that glows in pinks, blues and reds. It lines the entire outside wall of the giant pillar of stone
Zhage laughs
Arman Kharas: This is the Life Tree of Hylar. This is the center of Thorbardin. This is our home.
Taurus peers up at the coral and smiles, turning back to the group after a moment.
Leopard (Vexin) pounces off the boat, nerly bowling Taurus over
Arman Kharas gazes upon the Stalactite with a proud expression
Taurus begins to lose ballance, swaying to the right as he grasps frantically for something to keep him from falling into the water!
Zhage grabs ahold of Taurus, steading him.
Arman Kharas: m (to his Hylar sodiers) men, you can take your leave. Come and see me tonight and you will be rewarded for your valor in today's rescure.
Taurus steadies himself, smiles thankfully at Zhage.
Leopard (Vexin) wheezes at Taurus' antics, which could only be the hideous imitation of laughter form the feline form
Taurus shoots Vexin a glare.
Zhage (in Kender): Should I push him?
Leopard (Vexin) licks Taurus' hand
The Hylar soldiers salute and scurry off into the thong of dwarfs lining the docks
Leopard (Vexin) sits on his haunches and just grins at Zhage
Taurus steps away from the waters edge, moving slightly into the crowd around the docks incase an 'accident' should occure where he might end up sinking to the bottom of the sea.
Leopard (Vexin) , soon bored, begins to follow Arman
Taurus: We have tarried for too long, we must meet with your father and the other leaders.
Arman Kharas: Come this way.
Taurus nods and steps in behind Arman.
Zhage still grinning, follows Taurus.
Taurus (Quietly): Zhage.. I would be interested in learning their language. Would you teach it to me?
Zhage (quietly back): I can try.
Taurus nods.
Leopard (Vexin) prattles on in growls and purrs, forgetting that nobody can understand him
Arman leads you along the docks towards the tip of the Stalactite. A wide stone ramp leads up into a lage archway. The streets are packed with dwarves going about their daily lives. Despite being under a mountain, you see that streams and rivers wind their way through aquaductes and all manner of flowers and plants grow in places that have obviously been decided upon to enchance the city's beauty.
Taurus: This place is truly amazing...
Taurus: The architecture is stunning, and amazingly practical. This would be an exremely difficult fortress to siege.
The dwarf prince leads you toward a large tunnel that is congeseted with dwarves. They seem to be waiting in line.
Leopard (Vexin) gets up on 2 feet, bracing against Taurus to tower over everyone for a look ahead
Arman Kharas: aye. And that is only if an attacker could breach our numerous defenses that are found all along the way to the Life Tree
Zhage (quietly): Whatever you do Taurus, don't call anyone a jargh.
Taurus nods several times to dwarves as he passes, offering a pleasant smile. Though perhaps looking somewhat odd in his battered armor; his helm half smashed open on the right.
Taurus: Aye.
Taurus nods to both comments.
Taurus: These people, I assume, are here to meet with a lord or magistrate.
The line shuffles along at a steady pace and soon you make your way through the tunnel. You soon see that it opens up to a lage pit. You peer over and it sinks into darkness. Looking up, it stretches up as far as the eye can see. The shaft is lit by the glowing coral
Arman Kharas shakes his head.
Arman Kharas: they just are trying to get to another part of the city just like us...
Taurus: Ahh.. I see..
Taurus: Please, Arman. In dwarven culture.. how am I to address your father? I wish not to bare insult.
almost on cue to Arman's words, a crystal clear platform that seems to be suspended in mid air slows to a halt in the shaft. Dwarves are standing upon ut and they exit out another tunnel on the otherside. Once the platform is clear, Arman leads you onto the clear disc alnog with a hundred or so other dwarves.
Arman Kharas: You may address him as Thane Hornfel. That is most acceptable. When addressing any of the Thanes while in council, you should address them as Thane and then their sur name.
Taurus peers at the platform closely before stepping on, his attention straying from one wonder to the other; never having seen such a wonder in architecture.
Taurus: Thank you, I shall endevour to do so.
The clear platform shoots upward at a dizzying speed. The fact that you can see down the shaft as it rises only makes things more difficult to bare. All the dwarves, however, do not seem to be affected by the trip, probably having ridden the platform hundreds of times before.
Zhage: This is unsettling..
Zhage: I think I prefer flying...
Taurus: It's not so bad.
Taurus smiles, glancing down at his boots of levitation.
the platform stops at numerous levels letting dwarves off, and new ones on. Most of the dwarves gawk at you, being the first time they have ever seen a non-dwarf.
Taurus: It's ok, he doesn't bite.
Taurus gestures to Vexin.
Zhage: Hard..
Leopard (Vexin) grins
Zhage (quietly): you think this would be a good time to become a lion?
After several minutes, the platform finally stops at the top. You find that you are the only ones upon the lift at this stop, as everyone else has gotten off on earlier levels
Leopard (Vexin) playfully yawns at the stranger dwarves, displaying his huge fangs
Taurus (Quietly): Unlikely...
The highest level of the Life-Tree contains a complex of buildings and passages which serve as the home of the Hylar thane, Glade Hornfel, and the seat of Hylar government. Water flows throughout this level, irrigating numerous gardens here and below. The water spills through a series of ornately carved waterfalls during the course of its decent to the lake below.
Taurus peers around at the suddenly large life. Stepping off quickly he peers around before following Amarns lead.
Zhage: This is quiet amazing.
Arman Kharas: Take rest in these chambers here for now. I will see how long it will be before you can address the Thanes. tidy yourselves up if you wish. I will return shortly.
Taurus: Thank you Arman, I am in your debt.
Taurus inclines his head respectfully.
Leopard (Vexin) , bones crackling, shifts back to Kender form
Arman Kharas: No, it is I who is in debt to you. You all helped save Pick, and that will not go without reward.
Zhage bows his head as well.
Leopard (Vexin): Bye Arman!
Taurus: I am only happy we got to him in time.
Vexin Sixtoes stretches and begins grooming Skitters
Taurus: Vexin... you wouldn't happen to have a pry bar in one of your pockets would you?
Zhage quietly while eyeing everyones pack. " I don't think we need a reward.."
Taurus: I'm going to have difficulty getting my helm off.
Vexin Sixtoes: We need to unload, then collect a reward
Vexin Sixtoes: Or convert to gems... they're prettier anyways
Vexin Sixtoes: Dwarves must have tons of gems!
Eben: I would imagine so too!
Vexin Sixtoes holds up a balled fist and talks of diamonds THIS BIG!
Taurus looks to Eben, almost haven forgotten he was with them.
Taurus: You all deserve a well rested break.
Taurus: We've come a long, and whilst our journey is far from over, we should take some water and clean up before meeting with the Thanes.
Vexin Sixtoes: Did he mean "shortly" as in... after sleeping? or as in... an hour?
Zhage: You think he was making a short joke?
Vexin Sixtoes laughs merrily
Eben joins in the laughter at the joke
Taurus smiles and shakes his head a little, sitting on a bench and after dumping his pack on the ground with a relieved sigh.
Zhage: Now.. how to get that helm off..
Vexin Sixtoes leans against Skitters and dozes off in hopes he'll get some uninterrupted sleep before the meeting
Taurus: The side plate is just bent a bit and its sheared at the bottom, if I pull it'll cut into my neck. I just need to bend the plate back a bit...
Just before Vexin falls to sleep, a knock on the door to your chamber is heard.
Taurus looks up.
Taurus: enter.
Zhage: I do have a rod that could work..
Taurus: We'll try it..
The door swings open and a dwarf dressed in shining plate armor and a helm with a great red plume enters.
Taurus stands rigidly.
Taurus: Greetings.
Hylar Guard: Master Arman as request me to tell you that the next concil of the thanes is to be held in the morning of the following day. You will be retreived at this point by Arman himself.
Taurus: Please relay to Arman our thanks.
Vexin Sixtoes: Too early!
Vexin Sixtoes: 5 more minutes!
Vexin Sixtoes rolls over and covers his eyes
Vexin Sixtoes groggily looks up at the dwarf, hoping he heard right
Vexin Sixtoes: Morning?
Hylar Guard: If you need anything, please come and find me. I am stationed back at the transport shaft. I am Glarman of the royal guard
Vexin Sixtoes: Ok nite nite guard person
Zhage: Perhaps you have a pry bar?
Vexin Sixtoes crumples back down next to Skitters and begins to snore
Hylar Guard looks to Zhage with an odd expresion
Taurus: We will wish to trade with some of your merchants. May we traverse your city? I'd be most interested in taking a look around.
Taurus: Oh yes, and a pry bar...
Taurus taps his twisted helmet.
Glarman: we can bring you a pry bar, if that is your desire. You are free to travers our city. Arman warns you not to leave the city without an escort.
Taurus: We shall not.
Skitters snores obscenely loud, chittering in between
Taurus shoots a look in the direction of Skitters before turning his attention back to the guard.
Zhage (glancing at Vexin): Wish I had a silence spell..
Glarman: I shall return with your pry bar. If there is nothing else, then?
Taurus: Please.
Glarman exits the chamber, closing the door behind him.
Taurus sits back down, releasing a sigh and looking around at his companions. Removing his gauntlets slowly.
Gilthanas: As much as I hate underground places, this is truly a wonder to behold. And the view we have!
Gilthanas points to the window
Taurus looks towards the window, standing he approaches and peers out of it.
Zhage: Taurus... with the power of the gods that you have, is a little cut all that bad?
Taurus: It is indeed remarkable Gilthanas. The dwarves here take as much pride in their city as your people do.
Taurus: I do not wish to spend the gift of the gods frivously Zhage...
Zhage (smiling): I can knck you about with my staff it that bends the rules a bit..
Taurus laughs and shakes his head.
You are near the top of the vast chamber, near half a mile up. Below, you see the sea and tiny boats making their way across the waters. Shafts of light from the crystals can be seen shining down on the city across the sea and the glowing coarl lights twinkle on the cavern walls
Taurus: No, it will be fine. If the guard cannot find a pry bar we'll make do.
Taurus: This place would be perfect for the refugees...
Zhage: Yes it would.
The door knocks agains
Taurus: There is plenty of space, and though they may have to contend with the Thiewar it will be far safer than out with the dragon armies.
Taurus: Enter.
Zhage: Aye.
Taurus looks over to the door from the window.
the door swings open and Glarman enters, a pry bar in his hands.
Glarman: your pry bar, sirs.
Taurus eyes light up.
Taurus: Thank you greatly!
Taurus strides over, taking the bar, testing its weight and nodding.
Taurus: This will do smashingly.
Glarman nods. Glarman turns on his heel and leaves, closing the doors behind him once again.
Taurus goes and sits down, playing around with the prybar for a few minutes. Wedging it between his shoulder guard just under the sheared part of his helm. Slowly he begins to work it free.
Taurus: I'd like to idntify the rest of these magical items
Zhage: You ok there Taurus?
Taurus: Convert what we do not need into local currency and divide it amongst us for resupply.
Taurus: Aye Zhage... I've al-almost got it..
Zhage: I don't know if you will be able to get a lot of items identified.. Magic isn't too popular amoung the Dwarves.
Taurus prys at the steel, gritting his teeth. Then with one final yank he sets the bar aside and carefully pulls the help off his head.
Taurus: It isnt?
Zhage: Not really..
Taurus: Oh.
Gilthanas: I know that the treasures from Skullcap belongs to those who found it, but if we can somehow get the refugee's in here, they will also need money to live. I would suspect that the dwarves hospotality would go only so far... but perhaps I am wrong.
Taurus: No, you are correct Gilthanas.
Taurus: The refugee's will need wealth to resettle.
Zhage: Yes..
Taurus: Perhaps we may return to skullcap for the rest to help put towards their rebuilding; once they're here and all is safe.
Gilthanas: provided that the dragon armies don't find it first. We did not see much of them travelling through the Tharkadan mountains, but I am sure they are eager to recapture their slaves. Time will be short.
Taurus: Either way, I do not wish to be lugging this pack around so heavily ladden for another week.
Taurus: Aye. We shall worry about such things once the refugee's are safe.
Gilthanas: I'm sure Arman will allow us to store this here until we return with the refugees. Assuming that they grant us solace.
Taurus: Indeed. But.. first things first.
Taurus begins to remove his shoulderguard.
Gilthanas: How many magic items are left to be identified, Taurus? Between Zhage and myself, we should be able to identify them all.
Taurus: I need a bath.
Taurus: I believe there was one set of chainmail, 2 flasks and a shield.. that I was carrying.
Taurus: Did anyone else have anything of which they needed looked at?
Zhage: I think Vexin has some items, but I don't recall what.
Gilthanas: I am able to identify 3 items for tonight. Three more tomorrow if you would like.
Taurus: Poor little guy is exhausted.
Taurus: Aye, we shall do the chainmail, shield and a bottle tonight.
Taurus nudges the ladden pack.
Taurus: They're in there. Knock yourselves out.
Taurus stands, taking a spare fold of clothes from his pack and his armor and goes in search of some baths.
Gilthanas examines the three items and casts his magic, allowing him to discover their properties.
Zhage: I unfortuately do not have the correct spell memorized, but I can help out tomorrow if need be.
Zhage: So what are our plans now?
Taurus: Rest and prepare for our meeting with the Thanes.
Taurus: And clean up, even you could use a bath I'd think.
Zhage: I probably could.
Taurus: It's been nearly 2 weeks since we've met civilisation...
Taurus: Feel free to wander the city, see the place. Just keep a low profile, if possible, and get some rest. You've earnt it.
The night passes and you all find great comfort within your suite here in Thorbardin. The warm beds and fresh water to clean with is a nice treat that you have not had the luxury for quite some time now. You awaken to what you believe to be morning and prepare for your meeting
Eben Stretches and yawns
Eben: that's the best sleep I've had in weeks.
Taurus neatly trims his beard as others wake, having arose early for prayer himself.
Taurus: I can attest to that Eben.
Taurus: I almost fell asleep in the bath, twice, it was that comforting.
Eben: so what is the plan for this meeting? are we to prepare or should we just go in with an optimistic outlook?
Taurus: Perhaps both.
Taurus: What do we need? and.. What can we offer?
Taurus: What do you estimate the number of refugee's at?
Gilthanas: 800 or so... give or take.
Taurus: Well. They have the room.
Taurus: And if we worse comes to worse, we can shut the gates on the dragon armies and hide our heads in a box of sand.
Taurus: And the Hayler will have a couple hundred extra strong backs to defend against the Thiewar.
Eben: It seems that Arman has taken a likeing to us as well. If he is present at this council, perhaps we can count on his words as well.
Taurus: Aye, it is always beneficial to have a sympathetic voice in chorus with our own.
Taurus: What I would like to do would be to unite the Thanes into taking action against the Drak forces and purge them from this land. They cannot do it divided however, but, as I've seen the animosity between them and the Thiewar it might not be wise to push alliance
Taurus: with their fairer skinned kin.
AS the party prepares for their meeting, the door knocks, loud and firm.
Taurus: Enter.
Zhage wakes from the sound of the knock.
Zhage (groggily): What time is it?
the door swings open and Glarman moves to the side. Arman, dressed in a finely embroided cloak enters.
Taurus tucks his helm under his arm, his armor cleaned and polished the night before; unable to sleep properly without completing such a task though still quite damaged. Bowing to Arman as he enters.
Arman Kharas: The meeting of the Thanes is to take place shortly. Gather yourselves and I shall take you to the council
Taurus: Arman, thank you for your hospitality. We shall be ready soon.
Taurus hurries over to Vexin, kicking him (gently) awake.
Zhage gets up and stretches, several loud pops can be heard.
Vexin Sixtoes: HEY!
Vexin Sixtoes: I was SLEEEEEPING!
Taurus: Are you going to sleep through the whole day?
Arman Kharas: It should be known that The Council of Thanes is alwats conducted in dwarven. If you cannot speak or understand our language, an inerpreter shall be provided.
Vexin Sixtoes: Well... meeting with a bunch of upity dwarves doesn't sound better
Taurus: We're to meet with the Thanes, a story as grand as the albino troll in the workings no doubt.
Vexin Sixtoes: No offense, Arman
Vexin Sixtoes: Fine fine...
Zhage: I can interpret for Taurus.
Taurus nods his thanks to Zhage.
Vexin Sixtoes gets up and wakes Skitters
Arman Kharas raises his hand to signal that no offense was taken
Taurus: Freshen yourselves up, but make haste. We cannot keen Arman waiting.
Zhage noticing the holes and rips in his robe, chants and places a hand on his robe. The holes and rips seal themselves.
Arman Kharas: Allow me to tell you a few things about the way the council works. The Council of Thanes rules Thorbardin. Each of the nine dwarven kingdoms is theoretically entitled to an equal seat on the council. In practice, this is not the case. The Neidar (Hill) dwarves split with the dwarves of Thorbardin during the Dwarfgate War, so their seat is empty. The seat of the Kingdom of the Deadthe clan all clerics of the dwarves joinis also vacant. The Kingdom of the High King has been vacant for over 300 years, since the time of Derkin.
Taurus: So only six seats are filled.
Taurus prooves he can count.
Arman Kharas: yes. The other seats are comprised of the other clans. When we arrive, I shall introduce you.
Zhage before we leave, can I see that helm Taurus?
Zhage: Before we leave, can I see that helm Taurus?
Taurus nods, hands the helm to Zhage.
Zhage chants quietly and hopes some of the damage is repaired.
Taurus: We are ready.
the damge from the helm magically seals together, looking brand new.
Arman Kharas: right. follow me. It is not far.
Zhage hands back the helm. "Think it does look a little better.:
Taurus eyes widen and he smiles, taking the helm and giving Zhage a hearty pat on the back.
Taurus: Nice work!
Taurus falls in behind Arman, carrying the helm under his arm.
Zhage winces a bit.
Zhage: Thanks.
Arman leads you through the picturesque halls of the life tree. Soon, you are upon a set of chamber doors that sit open at that moment. Two dwarves stand guard in cerimonial armor. Arman enters and takes you to the side of the circular chamber where he waits in scilence.
Taurus admires the armor quietly, reminding him of those back home. Catching his mind from wandering too far he follows Arman into the chamber and stands quietly.
across from you is a semi circle of nine thrones. They all are empty at this point, and all are equal in size with the exception of the throne in the center of the semi-circle which is larger than the others.
Taurus stands rigid, doesnt shift nor fidget. Simply waits patiantly, quite comfortable in such a formal location.
shortly after you have entered, dwarves dressed in fancy garb enter at their lesiure. each come to a throne that sits around the larger one in the center, and soon, all the seats are filled except for the large throne, and two smaller ones on either side of the large one.
Once all the dwarven thanes are settled, the giant doors to the chamber are quietly closed and the Council of Thanes begins.
Zhage looks about the room, watching the going ons.
Arman steps forward to address the council.
Zhage gets ready to interpret for those not knowing Dwarven.
Arman (With great Formality): My beloved lord father, my lords the great and noble Thanes of Thorbardin, I thank you for receiving me and allowing me to speak before you.
Arman bows deeply, then gestures toward you.
Arman: I present to you my friends who provided invaluable assistance in the rescue of my brother Pick and fought bravely at our sides against many foes.
Taurus bows to those seated in the thrones.
Arman Kharas: Please, step forward when I introduce you to the council.
Arman Kharas: Taurus, Knight of the Solomnic lands. He is touched by the gods who grant him the divine power of their graces!
Taurus steps forward and bows deeply at the introduction, standing to attention once more.
Arman Kharas: Zhage, Wizard of High Sorcery following the Robes of Red!
Zhage steps forward and does a bow.
Arman Kharas: Vexin, a druid blessed by the gods as well! His powers are unlike any I have seen!
Vexin Sixtoes steps forward and waves
Zhage was going to so let loose a display of magic, but decided against it.
Vexin Sixtoes: Hullo!
Arman Kharas: Gilthanas, prince of the Qualinesti elves!
Gilthanas steps forward and bows slightly
Arman Kharas: and Eben, from the seeker lands.
Eben steps forward.
Arman Kharas: The Thanes. Please stand when I address your name.
Arman Kharas: Glade Hornfel of the Hylar.
Arman Kharas: Raelgar Ironface of the Theiwar.
Arman Kharas: Rance Coalmount of the Daegar.
Arman Kharas: Gneiss Truesilver of the Daewar.
Arman Kharas: Tufa Bloodeye of the Klar.
Arman Kharas (clears throat before presenting the last Thane): And Bluph of the Aghar.
Taurus blinks.
Bluph snaps up to full alert as if he was about to fall asleep in class and the teacher just called his name
Taurus hides any form of groan that threatened to spill out.
Zhage can't help but smile at the inclusion of the Aghar.
Vexin Sixtoes waves at Bluph
Raelgar stands to adddress the council
Taurus watches the Theiwar representative very closely.
Raelgar of the Theiwar: My lords, Arman is a wanted criminal in my Kingdom. I object to him being allowed to speak here, and I certainly object to the mere presence of thesecreatures in our hall!
Raelgar motions toward you.
Taurus inclines his head gracefully when refered to.
Vexin Sixtoes: I object to being assaulted by Theiwar...
Zhage represses the urge to swear at the Dwarf.
Gneiss of the Daewar: Were all well aware of your standing disagreement with Arman, son of Hornfel, my lord Raelgar. I, for one, would like to hear what these people have to say. Agreed?
Taurus places a hand on Vexin's shoulder.
In a quick show of hands, Raelgar is the only one not to raise his hand and thus is outvoted.
You all notice the venomous looks Arman and Raelgar of the Theiwar traded when he mentioned the rescue of Pick and the fighting in the north gate.
Arman Kharas motions for your party to step forward and address the council.
Vexin Sixtoes (in a loud whisper to Taurus): I can still taste Theiwar blood... ew
Zhage (quietly to Taurus): I'll translate for you. Feel free to do your thing.
Vexin Sixtoes (in a loud whisper to Taurus): I don't think thy bathe
Taurus looks between his companions and steps forward. Blinking at Vexin he shoots the kender a frown and shakes his head, then, speaking to Zhage he addresses the council.
Taurus: My Lords of the Thanes, it is a great honor to stand before you in your great city this day.
Zhage does the translating.
Taurus: It is unfortunate however that we come baring such grave news.
Taurus: The outside world changes, a storm rages, and even this great bastion may not be able to weather its effects.
Vexin Sixtoes: I like storms
Zhage shoots a look at Vexin while translating.
Vexin Sixtoes grins back
Taurus: A great army has risen, Dragons of old leading creatures and beasts alike against the people of Ansalon. The plainsmen have fallen. The City fokl have fallen and the Elves have fallen. You are all that remains. A single island, surrounded by turbulent waters.
Taurus: It is only a matter of time before these dark forces draw to encircle you.
Taurus: We bring warning of these dark times so you might prepare yourselves. But also, we bare a most humble request. To accept the refugee's of the surrounding lands. A mere thousand. Those few who have escaped the grips of destruction.
Taurus: Offer them a haven behind your great walls. Band with them, and your kin, to protect what is left of civilisations. The gods wish not to see claw and tail descrate these great halls.
Zhage pauses a moment a clears his throat.
the council listen to you with respect. Hornfel seems to be very intrigued by your words whuke Raelgar seems to be uninterested
Taurus pauses several times, giving Zhage a chance to translate. Though he speaks comment he addresses the dwarves with clear, solid tones.
Taurus: Should you turn these refugee's away it will be them who you must face before Reorx.
Arman Kharas Watches for when Taurus has completed his request. He waits a few moments before he steps forward to address the council himself.
Taurus inclines his head at the completion and allows Aman to speak.
Arman Kharas: My lords... these men have also returned to us something we thought long lost...
Arman Kharas raises his hand to a dwarf standing guard at the door. the dwarf opens the door and another dwarf enters with a large ornamental box. He hands it to Arman and leaves.
Zhage all it would take is 2 gold coins
Taurus looks on with curiousity.
Arman Kharas sets the box on the floor and opens it gently. He reaches in and turns to face the Thanes. He holds high over his head a golden helmet. The Thanes mummer to one another and shift in their seats.
Vexin Sixtoes: You hear that? I returned the Dwarven Prince!
Vexin Sixtoes beams at Taurus
Taurus smiles to Vexin.
Arman Kharas: this is the helm of Grallen. Recovered by these men from the ruins of Skullcap! The helmet in which the prince's soul is trapped until it can be brought to it's final resting place!
Arman Kharas delivers the helmet to Hornfel who wxamins it closely.
Raelgar (sarcastic): Yes. This is all wonderful, is it not?
Raelgar: But was it not men who brought the Cataclysm down upon us and sent the gods away in disgust? Was it not a man, a human, who destroyed so many valiant dwarves when the War Between Brethren came to such a tragic end? And was it not the humans who joined the Neidar, the hill dwarves, and started that war which brought so much death upon us? No, my friends, my fellow Thanes of Dwarvendom, I believe we should have these creatures put to the axe immediately. We sealed our gates, and it is my people, the Theiwar, who defend them against outsiders in the north. Let us deal with them as we do all intruders.
Vexin Sixtoes: You're right! it is!
Vexin Sixtoes: Wonderful, that is
Vexin Sixtoes: You already tried to put us to the axe
Hornfel rises his hand to scilence the members of the council, as things become heated
Taurus does his best to remain silent as he listens to Raelgar address the council, a frown drawing across his features. Letting the frown fade quickly as Hornfel calls a silence.
Vexin and Taurus suspect something. Raelgar hit every point spot on. You wonder, did he know you were coming and have time to prepare this little tirade?
Vexin Sixtoes: ow long did it take to prepare that speech Lord Thane?
Taurus brows draw together and he tilts his head just slightly.
Vexin Sixtoes waggles a finger
Vexin Sixtoes: I smell a fish, and it ain't the giant catfish below!
Vexin Sixtoes grins wide, proud of his deductive reasoning
Hornfel: The Council will need time to converse before a disicion is agreed upon. Arman, please take our guests to the waiting hall until we have time to discuss this.
Taurus: I am afraid my companion Vexin Dragonslayer is correct. I also suspect some measure of foul play. Perhaps Lord Raelgar may enlighten us as to how he has become so well informed?
Raelgar: I have no need to answer to you and your kind. the Council is in consession. You must leave!
Taurus: As you wish.
Hornfel simply watches you, not swaying to either side.
Taurus inclines his head and waits to be shown the exit.
Vexin Sixtoes skips out the door, waggling his finger at Raelgar
Arman Kharas beckons you to follow and leads you to a large pillared room with soft cusioned seats and a sparkling fountain.
Taurus follows arman out of the room, once outside he speaks.
Taurus: My apologies for speaking out of turn Arman, but I believe Vexin is correct.
Taurus: Raelgar was forwarned.
Vexin Sixtoes: Raelgar is a liiiiar
Arman Kharas: I do not see how that is possible. No outsider has been within our halls for 300 years.
Taurus: Perhaps that is not the case.
Taurus: Is it possible to leave the mountain through other caverns?
Zhage: There are other means of communication...
Taurus: Surely the North Gate cannot be the only way in or out.
Taurus: Such as pigeons?
Taurus looks at Zhage.
Zhage: Any mage that knows his studies know of magic communication.
Arman Kharas: yes... but all other gates are in Hylar control, or at least on of our allies control. And the North Gate could not have been opened before since if it had, it would have fallen into the Chasm as if did when you opened it...
Taurus nods slowly.
Arman Kharas: it is possible that one who is magically inclined would be able to communicate with the outside. But one would need to make some sort of contact with them first. They cannot just randomly pick someone in hopes that their magical message will reach someone with similar evil goals...
Taurus: Perhaps we are mistaken, but it did seem somewhat convienant. Regardless, we have no evidence for such accusations so it might be wise we keep them to ourselves until such time as we do.
Taurus looks at Vexin.
Vexin Sixtoes sticks his tongue out
Vexin Sixtoes: Don't you have a truth spell O powerful alpha cleric?
Taurus seems thoughtful.
Taurus: I could pray to the gods to grant me such insight.
Arman Kharas: If Raelgar is indeed lying and you have some magical means to detect it, it would not be wise to do it within the Council of Thanes. That will be reguarded as quite disrespectful, even if it is done against Raelgar.
Taurus: I agree.
Vexin Sixtoes: Pfft!
Arman: My father is a wise dwarf. Hell make the right decision, and he has enough strength on the council to push it through.
