His 2 CONC Father held a position in the Royal Kings Dragoon Guards, and fought in 2 CONC the battle of waterloo. At 12 years of age he was apprenticed as a 2 CONC gardener, and in 1854 left the old land for Australia. He worked there as 2 CONC a gardener, and afterwards went to the Victorian and New south Wales 2 CONC goldfields, where he was successful. He came to New Zealand in 1861 in 2 CONC the Ship Ceres, and hearing of gold being discovered near Waitahuna, he 2 CONC made for there and later on proceeeded to Lake Wakatipu, where he took 2 CONC charge of a team between Kingston and Invercargill. He next settled in 2 CONC Milton and commenced business there in 1863 as a storekeeper. During the 2 CONC time he resided in Milton he was a member of the school committee and 2 CONC also the Milton Borough council. He was a personal friend of the late Sir 2 CONC George Grey. Of late years he has practically led a retired life on 2 CONC account of ill-health.He leaves a wife, six daughters, five sons, and 2 CONC eight grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of 2 CONC friends. One of his sons is Cr H.H.S. White, of Dunedin, and manager for 2 CONC messrs. W. But when 2 CONC parliament passed a window tax the Duke had to reduce his conservatories 2 CONC down to one acre and John Yandell was a very religious minded man said 2 CONC the country was not a good place to live in and set sail for the Burra 2 CONC Burra copper mines in South Australia in the year 1848, and was appointed 2 CONC a captain in that mine. In August 1851 his son augustus came over to 2 CONC Victoria to the gold fields at Ballarat but found when he arrived at 2 CONC Leichards beach (Port Melbourne) that gold was just discovered at Forest 2 CONC Creek (Chewton) he joined up with a party of cousin Jacks (Cornishmen) 2 CONC and arrived there in September 1851 and got a fine lot of gold. He 2 CONC returned to Adelaide by Bullock dray and bought his Father and Mother and 2 CONC family over and they all did very well and his interest was most active 2 CONC in all matters for the welfare of castlemaine. In 1835 John Thomas was transported for plundering 2 CONC the "Cumberland". She resumed her former married name and in 1835 owned 2 CONC Perth town lots G6, D3 and D17. Mrs Hokin, her daughter Mary Ann and sons 2 CONC John (a boat builder) and David all signed a petition for a Methodist 2 CONC ministers stipend. In March 1844 Mrs Hokin gave a subscription to the 2 CONC Anglican church.She advertised guano for sale in the "enquirer" in 2 CONC February 1847, at 4 pounds per ton. A copy of her will is on file. She is 2 CONC buried in the Stirling crypt at the east PErth pioneer cemetry. There is 2 CONC also on file part of an inquest into the death of a man named Murphy who 2 CONC died on her premises. 2 CONT Her second marriage could not have been a happy union as the following 2 CONC year John Thomas seperated from her and had published in the Perth 2 CONC newspaper, a paragraph stating that he would not be responsible for any 2 CONC debts she incurred, and that she was not a person to be trusted. Also on 2 CONC record a transcript of the trial of John Thomas.
