In Roman times Bath was called Acqua Sulis. The Romans built some baths there, where they could bathe and rest. Near to the baths is the sacred spring. Here over a million litres of hot mineral water rises each day at a temperature of over 46°C. The Romans thought this must be the work of the goddess Sulis Minerva.
Visitors to Bath today can taste the spa water in the Pump Room. This building was rebuilt in 1795. In the 18th century many people who visited Bath liked meeting their friends at the Pump Room. Many of the characters in the novels of Jane Austin met each other there. This photograph shows the front of the Pump Room
