Facts you may not have known about Catherine the Great

Fact Set One

*In 1767, Catherine created the legislative commission to revise and codify the Russian law. This law was based on the Nakaz.

*A system of local self-government was introduced in 1775 that decentralized power. The cause of this was that Russia was subdivided into 15 different administrative units.

*Catherine established the Russian Academy of Letters in 1783, then passed an edict to allow the formation of private publishing houses.

*Catherine issued the Charter of the Nobility in 1785 for the landholders of each province, which allowed then to form a general assembly and petition the empress.

Fact Set Two

*In the year 1754, she gave birth to her son who ruled Russia after her death as Paul I.

*Catherine overthrew her husband Peter III in 1762 and then declared herself as Catherine II the sovereign ruler of Russia.

*War was declared on the Ottoman Empire in 1768.

*Peace was fulfilled with the Ottoman Empire in 1774. A foothold was gained on the coast of the Black Sea and expanded westward after the First Partition of Poland in 1772.

Fact Set Three

*At the age of 67, Catherine the Great died in 1796. Catherine lived longer than any other Romanov monarch.

*In the Peter and Paul Cathedral, in St. Petersburg is where she was buried.

*Catherine Reigned from 1762-1796.

*Catherine communicated with the French writer Voltaire, who was a leading figure in the Enlightenment.

*She was born in Stettin, Prussian, and spoke little Russian when she married Peter.
