Book Art

A message from LuLu: I like to read. I love books because they are passports to other worlds. Some people call me a bookhead. You know how your parents and teachers would tell you to never write in a book? Well, I was good for a long time then I decided I wanted to make comments while I was reading and I was grown up and owned the book. Yes, I started writing in books.

Back in the late 90s I did small paintings and when I went on roadtrips I would make placements. I would lay a painting next to a parking meter or a building. On the back of the painting I told the finder they could have the painting for free. This worked out great with placements from Illinois to Seattle to North Carolina to Maine. Then 9/11 happened. One day I was in downtown Chicago and I did a placement in front of the Tribune Building. It’s a gorgeous landmark with McCormick’s rocks from around the world imbedded in the front stonework. As soon as I did the placement a guard walked out of the building and tapped me on the shoulder as I was walking away. “You will have to remove that.” he said pointing to the painting. So I did. No more outdoor placements because I don’t want to be targeted as a possible terrorist (although that would be a very flat bomb).

My new idea is to do book placements. I need to cull out more of them anyway. So some will have comments and inside the others I will do some artwork and sign it. I already gave a friend in Chicago a boxful and she gave them to Goodwill. Last year I gave some away in Phillips, WI and Thunder Bay. I plan to give more away this summer when I travel to Utah. I won’t have them available at the art-o-rama. They are travel freebies.

Good luck finding one!
