Just War Theory

First, a little background on religious wars. Since biblical times, (the Hebrew Bible mentions it) people have been deciding what consitutes a just holy war, but only with Saint Augustine did the theory take on the Christian context it holds today.

Saint Augustine said that holy war was justifiable by three criteria only:
* defending against an external attack
* recapturing things taken
* punishing people who have done wrong

Just War theory has been applied in many situations, not just Christian. The idea of Jihad builds on the Just War Theory.

About The Creator

I've always been intrigued by religion, from the earliest days of my Jewish school until I decided I was an atheist. I see religion -- namely Christianity -- as something that has caused many problems and wars throughout history. Further research on the subject interested me, so I decided to design a website about what I found. --Adam Linder pd 7
