Alprazolam: uses

Alprazolam is used to treat panic and anxiety symptoms associated with panic disorder. Alprazolam belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves ( central nervous system ) to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing effects of a certain natural chemical in body ( GABA ) .

Alprazolam: how to use

Take Alprazolam by mouth once daily usually in morning; or as directed by your doctor. Alprazolam should be swallowed whole; don't crush or chew tablets.

Alprazolam may cause dependence, especially if it has been used regularly for an extended period of time, or if it has been used in high doses. In such cases, if we suddenly stop Alprazolam, withdrawal reactions including seizures may occur while use Alprazolam. Report any such reactions to your doctor immediately. When stopping extended, regular treatment with Alprazolam, dosage should be gradually reduced as directed to help prevent withdrawal reactions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Though it's very unlikely to occur, Alprazolam can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior ( addiction/habit-forming ) . Don't increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed. Properly stop medication when so directed. This will lessen chances of becoming addicted.

When used for an extended period, Alprazolam mayn't work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.

Alprazolam: side effects

Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, tiredness, clumsiness, decreased interest in sex, decreased appetite, nausea, constipation, or joint pain may occur while use Alprazolam. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Alprazolam passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Therefore, breast-feeding while using this medication is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
