Who qualifies for a green card?

A green card more properly known as “alien registration receipt cards”, actually are pink these days, however, the name holds true. There is quite a process to obtaining a green card. In most cases you must first have a sponsor in the United States, usually a relative or employer who wants to bring you to the U.S. Another stipulation is that you have to apply for a visa outside the country in the country you live in. You must also convince the U.S. that you are eligible in one of these various categories available for permanent residences:
    • Immediate relatives
    • Ethnic diversity: Green card lotteries
    • Special immigrants
    • Refuge and political asylum
    • Temporary protected status
    • Amnesty
    • Special agricultural workers
    • Long term residents and other special cases1

Who account for the immigrant population?

    • Retirees. These are foreigners who are over fifty years of age who are taking part in non – profit activities, but who are getting funds from abroad funds.
    • Investors. These are foreigners entering the country to put money and more time into their capital industry.
    • Professionals. These are foreigners entering the country to perform a profession. There must be certain educational requirements that are filled before this can happen.
    • Scientists. These are foreigners who enter the country to perform scientific training for special educational activities.
    • Technicians. Foreigners entering the country to help with technical services for certain companies.2

General Facts about regulations of immigrants

    • Those who enter this country for only a restricted amount of time are allowed to bring a car, but those who are obtaining permanent residency may not.
    • They can only bring certain house hold belongings that must be Okayed before they are brought here.
    • They must have: a valid passport, shown economic solvency, and a certificate from the police with their last place of residency. They must have no criminal violations, payment of all their fees, and they must make a personal appearance before they can get the grant.

    Non-immigrants: these are foreigners who are allowed to enter the country for limited amounts of time for different specialized reasons. Here are some of the non-immigrant categories:

      • A tourist can enter the country for a variety of reasons and they will be granted a permit. This permit allots a time of six months and it can not be renewed.
      • A traveler who is only coming into America to get to another country is called a traveler in transit. They receive a permit that lasts for thirty days and can not be renewed.
      • Visitors take up the most common category. They can come here for business meetings, special studies, or to carry out any management activities.
      • Directors can come here to attend meetings and their permit for up to one year. This means one permit that can be renewed for times a year, for a maximum of thirty days each.
      • Refugees are foreigners who are allowed into this country to protect their life, security, or rights when they have been violated by violence, human rights, or foreign aggression. They will be allowed to stay in this country as long as the same problem is going on.
      • Students are granted a permit that lasts as long as they are students. They must prove that they have adequate credentials to be studying in official institutions.

      Immigrants: these are foreigners who come into this country with the intention of eventually becoming a permanent resident. They are allowed to stay in this country legally as long as they satisfy different requests and they are given a permit that can be renewed for five years. This list is above under who accounts for the immigrant population.

        Permanent Residents: immigrants who live in this country for five years may obtain resident status. This status must be requested within six months of their last renewal period.
