His parents purchased a remote controlled car for him to drive at a local R/C racing facility.

It was in that time and watching countless hours of racing every week that he had to get the feel of sitting behind the wheel and being in control of a real race car. He needed to feel the speed and competitiveness of the people he idolized every week.

After a lot of begging and pleating with his parents, and a part time job as a paperboy, at the age of thirteen he was able to start racing Go Karts at U.S. 41 Sprint Speedway in Lake Village, Indiana. The following year he went on to race in a regional touring series called the Great Lakes Sprint Series. This series houses the best go-kart drivers in the Midwest. In his first race out he won, quite an accomplishment for the caliber of drivers in the series. Finishing fifth in season standings.

The three years following, 1998, 1999, and 2000 Richard traveled all over the Midwest. Racing on numerous tracks in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Gaining experience on longer and faster tracks.
