Background of Strelitzia High School

School History

On 1 April 1968 the commercial department of the Technical College became an independent commercial high school with a headmaster, seven teachers, one secretary, one non-white labourer and 109 pupils. After severing its links with the Technical College, the newly-founded Commercial High School was placed under the control of the Cape Education Department. When standard sixes enrolled at Commercial High School for the first time in 1974, a serious accommodation problem arose. The extent of the problem was such that some of the pupils were taught in die Ladies' cloakroom. Fortunately the Provincial Traffic Police moved to the kindergarten section of Winterberg Primary School in Baird Street and the problem was thus alleviated. In spite of the fact that our pupils had very limited sporting facilities at their disposal up to the middle of 1976, a number of them excelled and obtained provincial colours. Since then our pupils have been responsible for many outstanding performances on the sport fields. With the passing of the years, we had different headmasters, namely Mr J.C. van der L. Nel, Mr J.W.S. Bezuidenhout and Mr J.C. Loock. When we reminisce, we realise that each of these headmasters left his unique mark on the school and that each contributed greatly to the development and progress of this school. We honour their memory!

Our school- It has been in action since 1968
