The facts

1) Self-harm isn't always about suicide.

Self-harm is often more about staying alive than trying to take our lives. People hurt themselves as a way to help them through a bad time, its a way of coping.

2) Everyone who self-harms, self-harms in differant ways.

Some people who self-harm cut thier arms, legs or tummy. Others burn and bruise thier bodies, Scratch,hair pulling, scrubbing and taking tablets (maybe not enough to kill) enough to blank things out. Basicly self-harm is anything that causes harm to your body.
3) Doesn't mean you are mad.

It's a sign that something is wrong. That something is bothering or upsetting you. All sorts of people self-harm its not just the poor or the needy.
4) Lots of people Self-harm.

There is a lot of secrecy with people who self-harm because they might feel shame and guilt because of what they do. But thousands of people have learned to cope by self-harming.

5) Its not attention seeking.

Some people self-harm as a way to get some attention but most of the time, this is not the case. The reason people self-harm is becasue they are in pain and trying to cope in the way the know how. It could also be a sign to show you that something is seriously wrong.

6) People can stop self-harming.

It may take a long time and a lot of help but you can stop harming. The person self-harming has to be ready to stop. As people sort their problems they find other ways to cope with difficult situations.

7) It can happen a few, or many times.

People can cut themselves just the once or many times. When we go through a bad stage it can happen alot of time over a short space in time.

8) Other things that are self-harm.

There is many things that can be classed as self-harm such as: Starving, drinking to much, over eating, smoking, risk taken and taking drugs. There is other ways that are more accepted in everyday life such as: working to hard, trying to help others and to much exercise.
