Many people think how can such a slow exercise be a martial art? Tai Chi was originally designed to be a martial art, and later many people discovered its health benefits. Tai Chi Chuan means Grand Ultimate Fist, and its based on yielding and re-directing. In hard style martial arts power and force is used.
Tai Chi Chuan movements are round & flexible, the persons mind is serene and is not concerned with winning or losing, but flowing with the Universe.

Tai Chi

This art is gaining popularity in all the world as an aid to good health, especially for adults of the 3rd age. This slow, graceful Chinese exercises helps to increased strength and muscle tone, a better motion and flexibility, improves the balance and coordination and it also reduces blood pressure and heart problems.
Many persons who practice this art finds that it improves concentration, takes away the feeling of stress, gives them more energy, helps them have a better posture and blood circulation. This martial art, because of its slow movements is excellent for those recovering from an injury and it's also helpful for preventing the brittle-bone disease, osteoporosis.

Description of the Program

Tai chi exercises is conformed by a set of  forms (paces). Each form consists of a series of positions strung together into one continuous movement. A single form may include up to 120 positions and may take as long as 10 minutes to complete.

In each weekly sessions, you'll be taught the different positions that make up the various forms. You may find it hard to remember all the movements at first, but they will become easier with practice.
Classes take 60 minutes, that is divided in a warm up session and the forms practice. An average tai chi form can be performed in 7 to 10 minutes, once it is mastered. Tai chi may be performed every day or periodically throughout the week. Daily practice is recommended.

No special equipment is necessary, although our program encourage participants to wear comfortable white loose-fitting clothing and flat shoes are recommended.

The Five Principles of successful practice.

1st.-Breath deeply and concentrate on Tai Chi.
2nd.-Eliminate any tension or problems in your mind.
3rd.-Be consistent in the movement and speed.
4th.-Practice truly and precisely. Study the movements you make.
5th.-Persevere. Practice for the same amount of time at the same hour each day, if possible.

Benefits

Especially for adults of the 3rd age, who face a decline in muscle strength, flexibility, and range of motion, tai chi offers the following:

1.-Its slow, deep breathing increases relaxation and concentration.
2.-Some of the basic movements--putting full weight on the lower leg, alternating from one leg to another, stepping backward and forward and from side to side--help to strengthen muscle and bone, while improving balance and thus preventing falls. (Nearly 30 percent of those over 65 sustain at least one fall. About half of these falls result in serious injuries, mostly fractures of the hip or wrist.)
3.-Moving the head, eyes, and body together helps to recalibrate the inner ear--the body's balance center.
4.-Natural extension of the body during tai chi helps encourage correct posture.
5.-Tai chi's low-intensity movements have an aerobic affect on the heart and vascular system.
6.-Focused attention on movements encourages mental alertness, while relaxing body and mind.
