Peru is one of the most fascinating countries in the world; it has a very rich history, an interesting variety of places to visit, and very nice and friendly people. Peru is also the land of the potato, corn, coca, and quinoa.
Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent civilizations such as Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, Chimu, and Sechin. Also, it was the heart of the former Inca Empire, named the Tahuantinsuyo, " The Empire of the Sun's sons". It's capital was the city of Cusco.
In 1532, the Spanish, leaded by Francisco Pizarro, conquered and colonized the Tahuantinsuyo. They changed the name Tahuantinsuyo for Viceroyalty of Peru. After that, everything changed in the former empire, the religion, the way of living, and the customs. Finally, the Peruvians were turned into slaves.
After almost 300 years of slavery, cruelty, robbery, and genocide, Peru gained its independence from Spain in July 28th, 1821, and it was achieved in 1824 after the Peruvian army defeated the Spanish in Ayacucho.
Since 1821 to 1980, Peru went trough between military dictatorship and democracy. Finally in 1980, Peru returned to a strong democratic leadership. Actually, Peru is experiencing economic problems and violence insurgency, but all these problems will not stop the Peruvian people who still believe in a better future.
