History of Omega Essence

OUR HISTORY

Our history truly is a unique one as far as the history of auxiliary groups are concerned. Our origin is not because we were the wives or girlfriends of a fraternity member. Our history lies with the history of Omega Psi Phi (only Omega Fam know how deep that is!!). In the early beginnings of Omega, Lottie (Loti) B. Wilson and Mary F. Flowers were dedicated to Omega. Sis. Lottie B. Wilson was instrumental in the establishment of the Beta Chapter (Lincoln University).

The brothers were facing an uphill battle in the expansion of Omega at Lincoln. Sis. Wilson who was familiar with the brothers and their intentions gave them her full support in this great endeavor. She allowed them to use her home for their meetings and on February 6, 1914 the Beta chapter was established and the Mother of all Pearls, Sis. Lottie B. Wilson was born. She is the essence of Omega. Sis. Mary Flowers let the Brothers use her home as a meeting place as well as social gatherings. Because she was so "sweet" to Omega Psi Phi she is honored as the first Sweetheart of Omega.

In the late 60s and early 70s with the rise of other fraternity and sorority auxiliary groups, our purpose grew and evolved. We (auxiliary groups) were to become interest groups for preparation to enter greek life. We were already exposed to the greek way of life, we learned the history of all the greek fraternities and sororities, parliamentary procedures, and participating in community service projects. We (auxiliary group members) were more than prepared for the journey into greek life. However many members chose not to go greek and become a soror but remain a Pearl. In the late 70s and early 80s our organization grew and so did the tensions between greeks and nongreeks.

In 1990 all National Pan-Hellenic organizations voted to disband all affiliations with auxiliaries groups. We still exist and assist the Brothers of Omega with serving and improving our community. The bond between the Pearls and the Brothers of Omega is never ending and unbreakable. Despite what others may think about us we will always be Omega's Ultimate Treasure!!

Our commitment to serving the community and love for Omega let to the birth of The Women of Omega Service Organization, Inc. (WOO) WOO chapters are growing daily and shows that ALL MY LOVE...ALL MY HAPPINESS...I'M GONNA GIVE IT TO OMEGA UNTIL THE DAY I DIE!!
