The most up-to-the-minute look in home design continues to be the mixing of modern and traditional -- dark warm woods with clean strong line, creature comforts in clutter-free space, vivid colour and pattern applied in spare, simple renderings. Antique English furniture that is set side by side with severe modern furniture. Windows are more architecturally interesting, shown bare or with less fussy fabric treatments and are often seen paired with murals on the wall for a distinctive European flavor. Colonials are also back, but with a pared-down profile, more contemporary with a modern air. Playing with scale is very important, furnishings and accessories are fewer and more streamline in look. The Swedish style of soft grey - blues paired with rustic pieces in painted wood is also big -- the impression of both lightness and solidity showing a mixing of modern and traditional. Amazing tubs are a focal point of bath design, paired with wall to ceiling mosaic tile, luxe laundry rooms that are sunlit, soothing and stocked with indulgent accessories including an ironing board, lots of cupboard and counter space are a dream come true for any home owner. The key is contrast of simple with luxe, embellished with plain. Don't forget fresh flowers -- they are the final touch in any home. If you have the space, make large bouquets. In late summer gladiolus are a must! The top five paint colours are Aqua Blue, Plum, Coral Pink, Wasabi Green and Grey-Brown.
Aqua Blue - Picture it in a kitchen with white painted floors and cabinetry accessed with Hawaiian print fabrics.
Plum - Ideal above wainscoting paired with camel drapery or sofa fabric and dark woods for an opulent look.
Coral Pink - You'll love this in a Florida-inspired sunroom, with painted black bamboo furnishings.
Wasabi Green - Makes a great backdrop for bamboo or other light or dark wood.
Grey-Brown - Used as a dramatic accent on wood trim, it would be stunning against pale blue, camel or even creamy whites.
