Dushanbe is the capital of sovereign Tajikistan. It is located in picturesque and fertile Hisor valley, in the height of 750-930 in on the sea level. Inside the towns are discovered lots of archaeological memorials of Greek-Bactria period (II B.C.) and remains of the settlements of the Middle Ages (VII-VIII). The first manuscripts sources mentioning Dushanbe refer to XVII century.

 

    In fact Dushanbe was set up in 1924 in the result of merging of three villages: Sariosiya, Shohmansur and Dushanbe, with the population of 5.6 thousand. During 70 years it became flowering city with population more than 1 min. people. The city is situated in seismic zone so when building 9-12 storied houses they use antiseismic materials like ferroconcrete firms.

Dushanbe is the biggest industrial center of republic. It gives more than 1/3 of industrial production of Tajikistan. It is the city of engineering industry (Tojiktextilmash, Tojikkabel, factory of refrigerators and others). Light and food industry (textile, silk, oil, milk plants, sewing knitted fabric, boots, tobacco factories; leather, wine, bakery factories and so on).

Dushanbe is an important scientific and cultural center. There is the Academy of Sciences of republic with 26 scientific research institutes, which work in all branches of modern science. There are about 20 high, dozens of special, professional and technical schools.

    There are 5 theatres (opera and ballet, academic drama theatre, Russian dramatic theatre and Youth theatre), concert hall, circus, more than 70 cinemas and motion pictures, film studio "Tojikfilm".

 

There is also state Library Firdawsi, more than 180 public libraries, 5 museums, radio and TV center, dozens of establishments for children under school age and so on.

Dushanbe is green city created by people's hand in front of mountains. City changes it's appearance and gets more beautiful.

Dushanbe is the member of International Federation of relationship cities. It became a relation with such cities as Monastir in Tunisia, Sana in Yemen Arab Republic, Lusaka in Zambia, Labor in Pakistan, Klagenfurt in Austria, Boulder in USA and others.
