Iced Earth

Review and Rating
Days of Purgatory This is a double Cd set of Iced Earth songs from previous albums that have had some changes in the recording of instruments or the vocals. In fact all the vocals are now handled by Matt Barlow who is one of the most powerful vocalists in metal today. This man sings with great power and emotion that can be at times moving and powerful and often both at the same time. This double CD set features many Iced Earth classics from the past that is a worthy addition to any power metal fans collection. In fact if you haven't got it then you are obviously a trendy fool! The production on some songs is still pretty weak in places however this is just a small gripe. This is Iced fucking Earth! Power!

Something Wicked this way comes The latest studio album from the kings of American Power metal sees them at their most melodic. They mix up the songs between out and out shredders to melodic slower powerful songs with emotional vocals. The CD seems to have alternate songs between fast and slow as if to give you arest between each bout of headbanging, The trilogy at the end is 20 minutes of what Iced Earth is all about! It is filled with everything that you want from them, classic riffs, brilliant emotional pwerful vocalas and great song writing!

The Dark Saga The most simplistic Iced Earth album and some would say their weakest. I would say it is a great album that has song orietated heavy metal music at it's core. There are no great technical work outs here everything is based around having heavy riffs that rock with the fantastic vocals of Matt Barlow. The song that is a particulat favourite of mine that I listen to over and over again is 'The Hunter'. Most of the other songs are fairly good as well but maybe not as good as the latest album Somthing wicked this way comes!

Alive in Athens A live triple CD set with an unbelievable live sound. This is perfect value for money for all Iced Earth freaks. This is awesome stuff and is hard to get through it all in one sitting but you can pick and choose your favourite tracks and crank up your stereo!

Immolation

Failure for gods Brutal Heavy death metal with particular hatred for Jesus! This is unrelenting. It constantly rumbles along at a pace and only occasionally is there any let up from the speed into a more groovier passage. For this one-dimensional aspect marks are deducted as I like my Death metal with abit more variation. The production is dense as hell which makes this quite achore to listen to all the way through in one sitting. One for Brutal death fans that don't take any prisoners and laugh in the face of fancy dan melodic death bands like In Flames!

Immortal

At the heart of winter I am not afan of Black Metal at all! But this displays a lot of class that lifts it above many of the bands in that genre. The riffs are classy all the way through. The songs are all fairly long and epic sounding which is quite interesting for Black metal. The pace is varied as well and not helter skelter, runnaway train style all the way through! Damn good metal for all metal fans, if you can stomach the vocals!

Impelliteri

Eye of the Hurricane The opening and title track to this CD is such a winner, it gets me everytime. The riffs are so melodic and powerful, they grab you and don't let go. The vocals are also very powerful and melodic whilst staying in the mid-range. The guitar playing is awesome as you would expect from the man whose name is the same as the band. a very high quality release!

In Flames

The Jester Race A fantastic melodic death metal CD! You like Melodic death? Then if you don't have this you must be mad! Brilliant from start to finish. Plenty of great riffs are mixed with one or two decent solos, but this band is about writing memorable songs with melodic fury and power! Most metal fans should enjoy this, even if you don't like the death metal vocals.

Whoracle Moving one step on from The Jester Race to a more heavier sound and less of a Death metal influence. Some interesting clean vocals are used which is different for In Flames. The songs are as usual so addictive that you cannot help but play them again and again. The Guitar tone is damn heavy on this album and provides many pure head banging moments for those that are that way inclined!

Rating - 8

Colony Very similar in style to Whoracle but with a heavier still production if that is possible! Classic songs aplenty, jam packed with the catchiest riffs ever. I think this disk is slightly better than Whoracle and on apar with Jester Race. Classic Swedish Melodic Heavy Death Metal!

Clayman This band can do no wrong at all. This kicks ass all the way with once again the classical riffs that are ultra memorable. The songs are pretty much as good as Colony. The production is very good, but it didn't give me the wow factor like the first time I heard Colony. Still I've only heard this twice, so this review is based on that. Everything else is as you would expect it from this band. The vocals are perhaps the best they have ever been, with more cleaner vocals to make the songs that bit more memorable. However, for me the riffs are what I want to hear and they kick major ass on this album!

Insania

World of Ice Power metal from Sweden! Good quality but the vocals could be better. the song writing is average as well, but there are some very decent guitars that chug along woith speed and melody! Not Bad at all for a debut!

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden The first Maiden album has bad production but the songs are there and you can hear the potential that they would go on to fulfill in later years. Features a classic instrumental called Transylvania! classic!

Best of the Beast beautifully packaged 2 CD set of Maiden Classics! True Maiden Fans should have bought this on the day it was released!

somewhere in Time Another close to the very top Maiden album. The sound is very clean and you can hear Guitar synthesisers which makes for an interesting sound! Favourite song is probably Heaven Can wait although they're all pretty damn good!

Rating - 9

Fear of the Dark Not the greatest Maiden album by along chalk! Still it does featue a couple of Maiden classic in the title track and Be quick or be dead. the rest of the album is so-so!

Rating - 7

The number of the beast Featuring the all time number one Maiden clssic, Hallowed be they Name! A great CD and one that gained Maiden world wide success. Gangland is the only real song which is boring and I don't really understand it in amongst the othet classic in there. Still a great album also featuring under-rated classic Invaders!

Rating - 9

Virtual XI The second Blaze album is better than x Factor in my opinion. Better songs and a slightly heavier sound. The Clansman is a great song in the great maiden epic tradition. Blaze sings Ok but he does seem to go a bit off key at times, to my untrained ears anyway. Especially in the song when two worlds collide. This song would be great with Bruce singing!

Rating - 6

Piece of Mind Once again many classic songs and a good sound as well. The trooper is nearly my favourite ever Maiden song!

Rating - 8

Powerslave In my opinion the number one album from Maiden! Only one Ok song which is Back in the Village. The rest are all great!

Rating - 10

Killers The second Maiden album is a good album that could do with better sound but in those you had to take what you were given! The songs are all pretty good though! Paul Dianno has quite a unique voice as well. The song Killers is an absolute classic!

Rating - 8

The X Factor The first Blaze era album is quite good in my opinion. The songs are all very downbeat though apart from Falling Down which is the first single from the album! The production is not great and makes everything sound murky although the bass as always is very clean and audible just as I like it. Blaze's voice is OK, but very brooding. He doesn't have the range of Bruce which means that he can't really hit the highs. Overall this album is too downbeat for my tastes whilst being a bit too long.

Live After Death The classic Iron Maiden live album! Very good quality sound as well and classic early Maiden songs! Great performances all round by each member. I love the clean bass sound on this album!

A real Live Dead one 2 CD re=issue of Live albums. The sound quality could be much better and Bruce's voice gets a bit crappy sometimes, but thats OK. What you get here is Iron Maiden songs and tha can't be bad. One to buy if you want both live albums for a cheaper price.

Seventh son of a seventh son Most Maiden fans say that this is their best album. I have to admit Iam almost in agreement with them however its too had to split some albums so this gets an equal first with Powerslave, however I do slightly prefer Powerslave.

Rating - 10

Brave new world The latest Iron Maiden album sees the Return of Bruce Dickinson and what a return it is! This album is great from start to finish. There is not really a bad song amongst this bunch. All of them have something good about them and most of them are very good. There are elements of all Maiden periods in the songs including the much hated Blaze era. In fact there seems to be quite a similarity to the material from The X factor and VXI in the songs. Anyway, I would say that with Bruce turning in one of his best Vocal performances ever, this is a great return to form for Maiden.

Iron Savior

Iron Savior The first Iron Savior album is quality power metal featuring the legendary Piet Sielk and Kai Hansen teaming up to produce a power metal fan's wet dream. Guitars blaze along, drums rattle, bass gallops! Songs are fairly catchy all the way through with a few slower sections thrown in to break up the speedy tracks. Good Stuff!

Rating - 8

Unification Even Better than the first album! Better song writing than the first album is what you have here. Good vocals and great riffs which will have air guitarists and headbangers in full flow! The story is based on a science fiction concept as well which is quite cheesy but interesting as well as I like this sort of thing a great deal!
