Katie Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio the 18th of December 1978. Her parents were called Kathleen and Marty Holmes and she was the youngest of five children.

She got interested in acting when she was in high school. She joined the school theatre and starred in many school performances. She wanted to be an actress, but told herself: "You live in Ohio-get a grip!."

Under a model competition in New York she met an agent who persuaded her to go to Los Angeles and do an audition for a movie called "The ice storm". She tried out and got a supporting role as Libbets Casey. When she was done with the movie she went back to Toledo again.

When she was asked to try out for the role as Joey Potter in "Dawson's creek", she said no. She had just got the leading role in a play at her school, and wanted to rehearse for it. But she agreed to send videotape of herself and things she had done. The tape did it, and in the end it stood between Katie Holmes and three other girls.

So she was called in for a new audition, but it was on the same day as the premiere of the play, and again she said no. She wouldn't let her friends down. Luckily for her, the producers could change the schedule so that Katie could come later. She got the role and became one of the most popular young actresses in Hollywood.

Her character in "Dawson's creek", Joey Potter, is a tomboy who has been through a lot. Her mom died of cancer and her father is in jail for selling drugs. She lives with her sister who has a black boyfriend. The TV-series is about Joey and her best friend Dawson Leery, and how their relationship changes when they grow up. Joey Potter is an independent and smart girl, and Katie Holmes has said: "I'm actually working on becoming more like my character. She's so smart and strong and witty".

After she began in "Dawson's creek" she has starred in three movies; "Disturbing behavior", "Go" and "Teaching Mrs. Tingle". Right now she's going to star in two new movies, "Wonder boys" and "The gift".
