Pocono Township, PA - Beginning on Monday, September 7, residents of the 189th District of Monroe County will have an additional way to speak to one of the two candidates who hope to represent Monroe County in Harrisburg's General Assembly. Gail Mastroberte will be the first candidate in the history of the district to offer weekly chat sessions over the Internet with would-be constituents.
Mastroberte, 46, said, "It is only natural to use this medium to reach out to as many people as possible. I find that baby boomers and Generation Xers are very open at using the Net to discuss issues that deeply effect their lives."
She noted some recent statistics regarding on-line use. "70.5 million (34.9%) of the 202 million U.S. adults use the Internet," according to a survey recently released by Nielsen Media Research and CommerceNet.
Another article published in the RT-imes stated that, "there are more Internet users in their 40's than in their 20's, a fact which dispels the myth of the Internet being a forum predominantly used by young people."
"This does not replace tradition ways of campaigning," said campaign manager Ray Masters. "Gail is very excited about the prospect of communicating with as many people as possible about their concerns and vision for the 189th District."
Mastroberte described herself as a newcomer to the on-line world. She is amazed that the whole world seems to be at her fingertips, whether it is in the realm of politics, newspapers, religion, art, music, shopping or travel. Libertarians are strict free speech advocates and view the internet as "the last bastion of freedom without the heavy hand of government control."
The weekly chat session is scheduled every Monday evening between 7 and 8 pm. The URL is http://www.angelfire.com/pe/gail4rep. Mastroberte invited all to participate regardless of political affiliation or viewpoint. She said that "dialogue is always constructive and positive." The final session will be on election eve, November 2.
The 189th district encompasses the Boroughs of Delaware Water Gap, East Stroudsburg, Mount Pocono, and Stroudsburg, and the Townships of Hamilton, Jackson, Middle Smithfield, Paradise, Pocono, Smithfield and Stroud.
Libertarians believe in individual liberty, limited government, personal responsibility, free markets, private property, voluntary exchange, the right to privacy and strict enforcement of the Bill of Rights.
The Libertarian Party is America's and Pennsylvania's third largest political party. There are approximately 24,000 registered to the party throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and according to current numbers, 416 are registered here in Monroe County. There are 42 elected or appointed Libertarians throughout Pennsylvania serving in various capacities.
