Spots
Mae Elms
A little friend of mine awoke itching one day.
With a whimper and a cry asked, why don't this itch go away?
Then looking in the mirror was surprised at the spots,
Asked, Is this what makes me want to scratch a lot?
Then mother explained, you have just taken the chicken pox,
And those spots you will find all over you, even under your sox.
But Toni, aged three cried, those spots are ugly to me.
And I don't want anyone laughing when they see.
But mother just smiled and said others too get spots,
And told to wait for a surprise that would keep her laughing a lot.
After nap time she looked out the door,
Giggled when she saw a dog with spots like hers, only more.
So now they just itch but the spots make her smile,
And knew that the spots would last for only a while.
So now on the bed lay the two with spots, only one who did itch,
But together, who was the happier? We couldn't tell which.
And I'll bet by now you know the dogs name,
Of course it's Spot and his spots will remain.
