Old Sam

Old Sam's Memories

Mae Elms

Lovable Sam in a corner stood,

Remembering past days as a real child would.

When he was hugged and loved all the day long,

Wonderful memories, but those days are long gone.

Sagging slightly, his legs rather bent,

Looking quite different from the day he was sent .

To dear little Tim, for his birthday age two,

Doing the things Tim would have him to do.

Then came the time, Tim was a busy young man,

No longer would carry the lovable old Sam.

For lovable Sam was a cuddly stuffed horse,

With brown eyes, and a tail of course.

He had stood in the corner alone,

Watching the things that Tim did in his home.

Content with a pat as Tim passed him by,

Until the day that made old Sam cry.

For Tim, who stood straight and tall,

Was going away to serve uncle Sam's call.

Tim patted Sam's head and said with a sigh,

"Good bye old friend, I guess this is good bye."

Now the years have long gone, Sam's lonely and sad,

Yet keeping his memories, the good and the bad.

But now he knew well he'd never more see,

His beloved young Tim or the glad days that used to be.

Though dust makes his eyes dull and he cannot see

His heart will neigh proudly, living in memory.

But perhaps some other glad day another child's hands

Will cradle and love him and make him feel grand.

And he'd make his new friend happy as he had done Tim,

But he'd never forget the day's that used to be.
