Proof of parentage for Jesse Bunch:
Jesse Bunch, along with his siblings Lively (Bunch) Goins, Frances Bunch, Samuel Bunch, and Joseph Bunch, are named in the final settlement of Rachel Bunch, widow of Joseph Bunch.
Rachel states: 4thly I give and bequeath to Jesse Bunch, Lively Goins, Francis Bunch, Samuel Bunch and Joseph Bunch the sum of my daughter Lively one dollar cash to be equally paid by Emaline Stewart and Martha Jane Bunch out of their share of the estate or to be raised and paid by them. Last I do hereby nominate and appoint William Babb my executor in witness where of I do this my will set my hand and seal this 19 th day of May 1848.
Rachel states this in a way to cause one to believe that Lively is her natural daughter, but the others are heirs to Joseph, but probably her step-children. She is leaving everything to Lively's 2 daughters.
Jesse Bunch was a Melungeon. Although I had never heard of a Melungeon before I did research on the Jesse Bunch family, the Melungeons have carefully preserved the legend of their history. This legend included an original descent from Portuguese adventures, keep in mind now this is before white people setteled in North America, and then later they intermarried with Indians, then Whites and Negroes.
Certain surnames are associated with the Melungeons, and the name BUNCH is a very popular one. This is not to say that everyone named Bunch is a Melungeon, but many Melungeons are named Bunch.
The shortest and one of the oldest written definitions for a Melungeon, was found in a dictionary written in 1892. Here it is: "One of a very dark people living in the Mountains of Tennessee-." By Dr. Isaac K. Funk.. New Standard dictionary of the English Language, p 1548.
Stone found in Seligman Cemetery, Barry County, Missouri,
GOINS is another popular surname of the Melungeons
