A map is a scale drawing of a land area from an overhead view. Topographical (topo for short) maps show the height of the land area they are of. A topo map is useful for planning a hike or picking a camping area. Contour lines are used to show elevation on a map. The closer together the lines are, the more steeply the elevation is changing. Lines that are far apart show gradual elevation change. If taken from an overhead view and placed on a graph, contour lines show you what a side view of the area looks like.
