Troop 53 submitted a charter to become a Boy Scout troop in September of 2002. The history of Troop 53 dates to before that time, however, exact dates, names, and events no longer exist. The original Troop 53 folded in the later quarter of the 20th century. All of the Troop's records and files were stored in the garage of St. John's Lutheran Church in Coplay, which burned to the ground destroying everything but the Troop Flag. Although the original cloth flag of Troop 53 was retired after one year of service to the new Troop 53, it is still kept as Troop 53 memorabilia. The new Troop 53 began with 8 boys, 2 above the minimum needed to start a Boy Scout Troop. Currently, 13 youth and 10 adults are registered under Troop 53's charter. During the year 2003, Troop 53 won second place in the week 5 chili cook-off at Camp Trexler. The Troop's Lightning Patrol also took 7th place at the North Valley District First Aid Meet. In late 2003, due to increasing size and leadership difficulties, the Lightning Patrol was disbanded. Two smaller patrols, the Warrior Patrol and Boy Scout Patrol, were formed with 6 Scouts in each. Although no longer an official patrol of the troop, during competitions, the Scouts present unite together under the banner of the Lightning Patrol. |
