Mount Carmel Back to Domination?
The Red Tornadoes have 25 Seniors, including Three Allstate Candidates in QB Marcus Wasilewski, WR Matt Moroz and DL/C Chris Steck, not two Mention Outstanding WR/DB Matt Koveluski and Tough Fullback Julius Demetrius. The Junior Class has also some big time players including Speedy all purpose back Justin Pellowski, 6foot 6 End Trevor Demko and Linebacker Sean Mccollum. In the recent Coal Bucket rout against rival Shamokin it looked like the Tornadoes didnt miss a beat when they put the 2nd and 3rd team Squads; Sophomore Ed Stewart was very impressive at Quarterback and on Defense. Freshman runningbacks Myrrick Lamb and Cody Shustack ran with authority and could start on many coal region teams. The Tornandoes look like they could be the team to beat of the present and as well as the future in the Region.
North Schuylkill back to respectability?
The Spartans start the 2008 Season 2-0 after numerous seasons of under .500 results, The Spartans havent made the playoffs since 1999, When Coach Bob Chesney led the Spartans to a District 11 Championship, The Spartans have good skilled players including Quarterback Garrett Kelly, Reciever Steven Ennis, and Backs Jared Whitecavage and Zach Cress, The offensive line which has been a concern for a at least the last 5 seasons, has been playing better than usual led by End Doug Dean and Junior Tackle Chase Skinner and that could be another reason for the skilled players rise this season. The Spartans will have some tough games coming up with the likes of Jim Thorpe, Haven and Marian and that could be a good indication if the spartans could get over .500; and with Coach Rick Geist at the helm who had playoff teams in the 90s they have a chance to turn things around.
Barket Dominating Region
Zach Barket is one heck of a back and possibly one of the best in the Coal Region History, First game in rout over Tri Valley, he rushed for 312 yards Second game just over 200 yards in rout over Marian; Trivalley and Marian are solid teams they are not 0-10 teams, Barket and the Haven Hurricanes appear to be as good as all the hype at the beginning of season; In the East Steel High and Southern Columbia look to be the only teams that will be able to beat them.
Jim Thorpe just reloads
Junior Quarterback Corey Cinicola has a big time arm and is 6foot 3 220 pounds, he is one of the best Quarterbacks in the region; However, there was a big question before the season. Who the heck is he gonna throw to? The Olympians lost all of there primary recievers to graduation including, Eric Busocker, Josh Hontz and Jacob Zurn. After two games that question is answered, 6foot Senior Kasheem Lynch is his Number One reciever and has been lighting it up, Seniors Jimmy Nunez and Chris Demuro also have made nice plays at reciever as Thorpe has won there first two games.
MID SEASON BLOG
Panther valley off to 4-0 Start!
The Panthers dont have a real superstar; however, what they do is have an all around solid good group of players who played together since age 6 on Panther Valley Minis. Junior Quarterback Casey Lawrence is coming into his own with his recievers Brothers Jake and Dan Dunn, Tom Eizenhower, and Ryan Porembo, The backfield is very solid in big fullback Ryan Richards and speedy tailback Kyle Mcavoy, Senior Ryan Fritzinger leads an improved offensive line. Panthers coach Damien has a lot to be proud of so far.
Changing Anthracite Conferance
The A9 started a few years ago and was dominated by Shenandoah Valley 0-4 and Minersville 1-3 since the beginning, these teams are very down this season, Jim Thorpe who also was at the top lost numerous players as well to graduation and is playing many Sophomores; and is 2-2. In comes North Schuylkill 3-1, Panther Valley 4-0 and Tamaqua 3-1, North Schuylkill has solid players in all three classes, Ed Pavalko a sophomore looks like he could be one of the leagues best linebackers upcoming, They are also starting a freshman Defensive End Mike Shinkus, Panther Valley has possibly the best junior class in the conference, there entire Backfield is juniors, Tamaqua is led possibly the best Sophomore Quarterback in the area in Ryan Palsgrove. Watch out for these three teams the next few years making noise.
Williams Valley looking good in the backfield
The Vikings have big backs Keith Thompson 6-2 195, Ryan Good 6-1 190 and Chuck Rodichok 5-11 210; also these backs are fast and shifty; This backfield goes under the rader by many and not get all the press , but watch out Twin Valley for the tough three vikings.
Lamb Mount Carmels Next Great?
Myrick Lamb is a 5foot10 170 pound freshman for the Tornadoes, he is contributing as an upperclassman returning punt and kick returns on a team with 25 Seniors. As a running back, Lamb is becoming the team's primary 3rd down back, making some big runs on Mike Brennan's Senior Laden Team.
Underclassman Quarterbacks dominating Region
It must be the year of the underclassman as far as Quarterbacks, only 5 Teams in the Region have starters who areSeniors Brent Becher of Pine Grove, Marcus Wasilewski of Mount Carmel, Garret Kelly of North Schuylkill, Will Eckert of Marian and Jeremy Campbell of Southern Columbia are starting as Seniors. The Top Junior Starting Quarterbacks having very solid years are Tyler Herb of Williams Valley, Casey Lawerance of Panther Valley, Corey Cinicola of Jim Thorpe, Matt Mcginley of Tri Valley, Mike Klazas of Nativity and Danny Merva of Shenandoah. Haven's Brian Murphy and Tamaqua's Ryan Palsgrove are having outstanding Sophomore seasons, while Mahanoy Quarterback Jordan Mrozka is the only Freshman starter in the area.
