Save Our Transit

No More Service Cutbacks, No More Fare Increases!

Who We Are

We are a group of Port Authority customers who are fed up with funding shortfalls, cutbacks, and generally public transportation being put on the back burner. SOT (Save Our Transit)is trying to raise public awareness of the benefits of public transportation in Allegheny County. We also lobby for more funding. In the past, we've had post-card campains, rallies, and other awareness activities.

What is the Problem?

Governor Schweiker signed the new budget which decreased funding for public transportation in Pennsylvania.

As a result, municipalities across the state are having to reduce service and/or raise prices. This makes matters much more difficult for low income individuals trying to get to and from work, school, and getting a job in the first place.

This affects everyone - not just bus riders. As public transportation usage goes down, more cars go on the road, making traffic even more congested, parking spots even more scarce, and air quality is decreased even further.

We need to "express" the need of public transportation. Currently, we are trying to raise awareness of Allegheny County Council and with the Governor.

How Can I Help?

The Simplest Way The simplest way to show support of mass transit is to use it. Leave your cars at home, or one of Port Authority's many Park-n-Ride lots. Take the bus to the park...use it!

Urge state politicians to provide adequate funding.
Write to some politicians. Letters are preferable, but you can also use email. In addition to your State Representatives, also contact the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Transportation Committee members, State Senators, and political candidates. If they have been supportive in the past, ask that they continue to keep this a high priority and urge their colleagues to support this as well. If they have not been very supportive in the past, urge them to do so. Use the "State Resources" links on the left side of this screen to help find out who your local representatives are, what their contact info is, and also for ideas if you don't know what you should say to them.

Urge local officials to pass a resolution.
Contact your local government officials (cities, boroughs, townships, etc...) to pass a resolution or ordinance which urges state elected officials to remedy the situation.

Tell others about the problem.
Besides writing to some politicians yourself, tell other citizens you know about the problem and urge them to write as well. Many people are unaware of the problem, and many of those who are don't know how they can fight it. Still more may feel that this doesn't affect them - inform those who drive about the increased traffic congestion and scarce parking spots that this will cause.
