VF LOGO The city of Reading is renowned as "The Outlet Capitol of the World." The factory outlet centers in Reading have a long history. One interesting, but little known, fact about the factory outlets is that they get their name because they were once actual factories. Some of the buildings were once used to manufacture textiles. Some were used for other purposes, but most of them were hosiery factories and knitting mills.

RDG. STATION LOGOThe outlets came about after the knitting mills became the largest of its business in the world. Sometimes there were irregulars and the companies decided to sell them to their employees, at a discounted rate, in separate stores. It was very popular with the employees, and because the idea became successful with them, the business expnaded to the general public.
