You're invited to attend this fabulous, fun and festive gathering! PEN PALS UNITED has now become a worldwide, successful, bi-annual event that is, perhaps, the biggest and best meeting place for letter writers the world over! With the huge success of PPU '92 (Illinois) & PPU '96 (Vermont) in the USA, PPU '94 (Swindon) & PPU 2000 in England (Kent), and PPU '98 in Canada (Calgary), PPU 2002 is returning to the USA and we're very excited about it! PPU will be celebrated in Australia in 2004 and in 2006 plans are being made for it to return to England, about 15 miles outside of London. Pen Pals United just continues to "go and grow!" Because each event has different coordinators with different chairing committees, PEN PALS UNITED displays a unique style & personality with each convention. We're certain you'll find PPU '02 a blend of those held in the past along with some new ideas and surprises.
While attending PPU '02, you can expect to share in the warm fellowship of others who are there to share their favorite hobby of pen paling, as well as experience entertainment with "theme" events, hospitality room open houses, a day of workshops, an optional day bus tour which includes time spent at STEAMTOWN USA (link provided on this page), lots of door prizes, and delicious banquet meals with planned programs.
This grand event will be held at EAST MOUNTAIN INN, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Monday, July 22 thru Thursday, July 25, 2002. This Best Western hotel is 3 miles from the downtown hub of the city. The hotel is located on top of a foothill of the Pocono Mts. The panoramic view of the Wyoming Valley is very scenic and inviting. The hotel's amenities include an indoor pool/hot tub/sauna complex complete with lockers, an exercise room, a wonderful outdoor sundeck/patio, a delightful outdoor path that leads to cozy & serene gazebo, 2 restaurants and a game room. All rooms include cable tv's and free in-room movie channel. Each room also has a video cassette player and the hotel even offers a wide selection of video rentals. Every room is also equipped with a separate phone line for computer terminal hookups for those who travel with a laptop.
PEN PALS UNITED has been able to secure an unheard of room rate for 2002 of just $79+tax that will accommodate up to 4 per room!! Yes! You read correctly ~ only $79+tax!! PPU's coordinators have personally toured and stayed in this facility to insure that it met all the standards and requirements needed for this EXCITING event! The entire hotel staff will be working with us to make sure that PPU '02 is every bit as successful as previous conventions. This hotel is the PERFECT size for us, having 156 rooms. It's large enough to accommodate our space requirements for workshops, dinners and planned activities and entertainment, but yet small enough to GUARANTEE that our group will be the ONLY main function for the entire 4 days we are there.
The convention fee has been made AFFORDABLE for you, as it has been at past PPU conventions. You'll be able to choose a 1-Day, 2-Day, 3-Day or 4-Day package plan which includes 1 substantial meal per day (3 dinner buffets & 1 luncheon buffet), your convention packet and handouts, workshops, open houses, doorprizes, use of the official PPU Hospitality Room with beverage refreshments, entertainment and all PPU hotel based events during these 4 days. Not included in the convention fee is your hotel room cost and an optional day bus tour and any spending money you may require for personal use. The convention fee is required of anyone attending who wishes to participate in the meal functions and/or PPU events.... The following are the convention fees: 1 Day - $45......2 Days - $80......3 Days - $110......4 Days - $130 Non-meal participants - $30 one time fee........... NON-REFUNDABLE REGISTRATION FEE - $12 (the registration fee is for the pen paler only).

This hotel is easy to find for those driving. The airport also offers complimentary airport/bus shuttle service as well.
