Commander’s Desk
Dear Legionaires,
On behalf of the members of American Legion Post 712, I would like to thank everyone who helped acquire, haul, excavate, and mount our Cobra Gunship. It took 4 years of endless phone calls and paperwork but they never gave up! All in all it was quite the accomplishment. We should all be impressed – but not surprised. These are the same men who came forth for their Country when they were called upon for WWI, WWII, Korea, VietNam, Desert Storm, and Iraq. Come and see the results when we have the Memorial Dedication of our helicopter on October 11, 2003, at 3:00pm.

911 Memorial Service, 2003
October is also the month of the anniversary of the invasion of North Korea, the bombing of the USS Cole, and the Beirut Terrorist Attack. There are many more dates when the military answered the call and some paid the supreme price. Again, I ask of you to find someone in service and write to them and show them your respect.

Fly your Flag!

For God and Country,
Bill Thieret, Commander

Halloween Dance Oct. 31, 9 PM this dance will be on a Friday Night so mark your calendar and make sure you are here early to get a good seat.

We would like to welcome the Bowling League and the Pool League back for another year of fun and good times. We now have two Pool Teams, and Twelve Bowling Teams. This is a great increase in member’s participation, (maybe it’s the hot dogs we give away that night). We also acquired two new bowling machines that are the best on the market.
So stop by and try a game.

At this time we will not be hiding blotto numbers in the newsletter, but we will be starting up again in the very near future.

The American Legion overall loses approximately 1800 Members a day! This is why we need your help in signing up the new Veterans that do not belong to a local post such as ours.

We are asking each member that attends the regular meeting each month to try and bring one regular member to the next meeting. October 6th will be the next regular meeting of Post 712, starting at 7:30PM. As always after the meeting we will be serving food and refreshments for all that attend our meeting. so please if you have some spare time, try to attend our next meeting and enjoy the friendship and the food.

I would like to thank all those that took the time and put forth the effort to sign up new regular members to this post. Without your help we will not be able to keep our regular membership over one thousand.

Please remember that we here at Post 712 work for all Vets and try to do what ever we can to help then and to make sure that they have what ever they need to make then as comfortable as we would like to be in every day life. This includes the Disable Vets that are in our local VA hospitals.

Again thank you for your support in the pass, and I look forward for your help in the future.
For God and Country
Bob Essey, Adjutant

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 712
We had a great turnout for the 911 Memorial Service held at the Post. It was a very moving ceremony led by Commander Bill Thieret. Pastor Doug Heagy from the Jefferson United Methodist Church gave an inspirational prayer. The Honor Guard did a great job to complete the ceremony.

Our annual Flea Market/Bake Sale is on Saturday Oct. 4th , from 8:00am – 3:00pm. We can accept items for sale up to Oct. 2nd, as we need time for pricing items and set up. Anyone who would like to donate baked goods can bring them to the Post the evening before or the morning of the Flea Market. All donations are greatly appreciated!!

The Post and the Auxiliary have planned together a visit to Southwestern Veterans Center on Monday Oct. 20th. It will be a Halloween party, so you’re welcome to go in costume. The Post will be providing a bus, so all you have to do is be at the Post by 5:45pm. The bus leaves at 6:00pm sharp! Please sign up at the bar. I guarantee you’ll have a great time, and the Vets at Southwestern love Post 712!!

Our cookbooks are on sale for $10 each. They feature favorite recipes of our Post 712 families and make a wonderful gift for Christmas, college students, bridal showers, birthdays, teacher gifts, and cooks, new and experienced. They can be purchased from any Auxiliary member or call me at 412-650-5129.
We have the new “Enjoy” coupon books for 2004 on sale for $25 each. Please see any Auxiliary member for one or you can call Rose Breen at 412-655-9103.
Our 2004 dues are $20.

Your dues must be paid by the end of the year for you to remain a current member. You can mail them to Carol Kregenow, 121 Dutch Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

Anyone interested in joining the Auxiliary may pick up an application at the bar, or call me at 412-650-5129.
Our next meeting is on Monday Oct. 27th at 7:30pm.
For God and Country Leslie Armbruster, President
