Ape-Catching Mario

Mario's first role in video games was to catch an ape on the loose named Donkey Kong. Back in those days, his name used to be "Jumpman" but somehow, over the years, he gained his own personality,
Small Mario

This was the first face of Mario in Super Mario Brothers. He stayed in this small, short jumping form until he ate a Super Mushroom. When Mario was in Small Mario form, one hit from an enemy will kill him
Big Mario

Small Mario became Big Mario when he ate a Super Mushroom. There were a few small advantages to being big. He could now jump a little bit higher, and it gave him the ability to get a Fire Flower. He stayed as Big Mario until he got hit by an enemy and then reverted back to Small Mario
Fire Mario

Mario became Fire Mario if he picked up a Fire Flower. The only advantage to being Fire Mario was to throw fireballs! He could kill many of his enemies with fireballs, even the Koopa kids, or Bowser himself!
Starman Mario

When any Mario picks up a Starman, he becomes Starman Mario, he starts to flash, and is invincible for a short time. He can run right through enemies without getting hurt.
Gardener Mario

Gardener Mario appeared in Super Mario Brothers 2. He could pick up many vegetables, or other objects, and throw them to defeat his enemies.
Referee Mario

Mario once took a job as the referee of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! He liked to count to 10 whenever a boxer hit the mat.
Racoon Mario

Racoon Mario appeared in Super Mario Brothers 3. When Mario picked up a leaf, Mario grew a racoon tail and ears, and had the ability to fly! He could alos use his tail to hit blocks, or kill enemies.
Tanooki Mario

Tanooki Mario also appeared in Super Mario Brothers 3. When Mario picked up the doll of a "Tanooki" he donned a Brown Tanooki suit. The tanooki suit also gave him all the advantages of Racoon Mario, but now he could become...---->
Stone Mario

Tanooki Mario could become Stone Mario by holding down and B at the same time. Being in stone form allowed Mario to be immune to enemy attacks. Too bad that MArio could only be a Stone statue for a short time!
Frog Mario

If Mario found a frog suit, he could become Frog Mario. Frog Mario is a little bit slow on land, but if he goes swimming in the water, he can be very fast. He can even swim into pipes that have air or water flowing out of them.
Hammer Mario

Mario donned this suit in Super Mario Brothers 3. He picked up some little doll that looked like a hammer brother, and he became equipped with hammers, and the ability to deflect fireballs when he crouched over.
Dr. Mario

Mario took a stint as a Doctor in the early 90's his job was to throw pills into jars to get rid of nasty viruses.
Space Mario

Once Mario was on the Gameboy, he got a few new faces. He could become Spaceman Mario and venture into outer spaaaaace.
Rabbit Mario

Another face of Gameboy Mario, he could don some ears and float slowly down to the ground.
Cape Mario

Once Mario ventured into the realm of the SNES, mario could don a cape and float in the air. He could use this cape to stay in the air all the way to the end of the stage.
3-D Mario

Mario took 3-d form in Super Mario RPG for the SNES. Advantages like jumping in 8 different directions really help Mario during his adventure.
64-bit Mario

Mario went 64 bit on the 64. He could now jump in any of the 360 degrees.
Metal Mario

Once Mario exchanged his normal cap for a metal cap, he became Metal Mario. He could now defeat his enemies by running into them, but this only lasted for a short time.
Invisible Mario

In Super Mario 64, Mario could also don an Invisible cap. When equipped with the Invisible cap, he could run thru certain objects, but I'm not sure if he could run through enemies.
Flight Cap Mario

In Super Mario 64, Mario could also don a Flight cap. If he wore the flight cap, he could jump into the air and slowly fly away.
Paper Mario

Mario's second attempt at 64 bit stardom landed him yet another 2 dimensional role. This time he was comprised of... paper.
