In mid-September 1862 physical examinations were held for potential draftees at several places in Lehigh County. Names of potential draftees were forwarded to Allentown for the draft, or "drawing" which took place on October 16-18, 1862. The following week, the conscript militia companies assembled in Allentown where they camped at the Fair Grounds, then located between 5th and 6th streets, north of Liberty. On November 7th, 8th and 11th, these men were mustered into federal service as the 176th Regimental PVI.

Private Nathaniel Moll saw service principally in duty along Union beachheads along the North and South Carolina coast. First at Suffolk, VA, until December 31, 1862. Then New Bern, N.
