                                            The 14th Birthday

It was Melissa’s first day of school in a new country.  She had just moved with her parents to England because her father was transferred there for his new job.  She missed it in New York, and she hated leaving her home and friends, but she figured she would have to cope with a new life style.  She walked up the steps of the school building holding her books tight to her stomach hoping all the kids here would like her and she’d at least be able to make one new friend. The bell rang as she sat down in her first class.

The teacher walked in. He was a tall and very handsome man with brown slicked back hair and black eyes. He had a big smile on his face as he dropped his books on his desk and looked over at her.

“Well class,” he said in a sweet English voice, “I’d like you all to meet Melissa Hope. She’s new to England. She’s joining us all the way from the United States. Isn’t that right Melissa?”

Melissa blushed being a little shy, “Yeah, from New York City” she said in her musical-toned voice.

“Okay. Well, welcome to science. I’m Mr. Keener,” he explained.

Melissa went through the rest of the day and had a great time. She made a new best friend named Jessica Earnheart. Melissa spent the remainder of the day with her and talked about the new and exciting things that she would encounter in England. The two walked home together that afternoon laughing joyfully at the humorous activities of the day. They reached Jessica’s door-step and said their “good-byes” as the sun fell down over the horizion turing day to night.

That night at dinner Melissa told her parents about her first day and they told her about theirs. She went to bed that night thinking that it wouldn’t be so bad here. She fell asleep petting her new kitten that she had gotten from the shelter and named Chance.

Melissa opened her eyes and a thick mist surrounded her. As she walked foward the mist disspersed opening into an oversized junkyard; beds, and pieces of newspaper, broken chairs and appliances hovered over her. Her eyes went wide in shock as she spun around a few times, “Where am I?!” she screamed to nobody in particular.

She turned suddenly, hearing whispering all around her but seeing no one. She suddenly got chills as she fell to the ground, her head spinning. And then, blackness.

She sat up in bed at the speed of light, breathing hard and sweating immensely. She wondered what had happened. She wiped her forehead and felt small hairs on her head.

“What? What is this?” she ran to her bathroom to see what it was, “AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. “Oh my God!!!” She almost fainted, when her parents walked in the room.

“Melissa? Melissa? Sweetheart? What are you doing? It’s 3 in the morning! Wh....What’s wrong?” her mom asked very worried.

“Mom look at my forehead!” she pointed a shaking finger to the middle of her forehead.

Her mom felt her forehead, “Honey, your forehead is fine.”

Melissa was now very confused. She looked back in the mirror and saw nothing. She could have sworn she saw gray and white small hairs protruding from her forehead. She felt very light headed and went back to her bed.

Her mom sat down beside her and rubbed her back. “Okay, now get some rest. I think the new environment is making you a little sick. You can stay home tomorrow from school. Ok?”

She kept rubbing her daughter’s back, the rubbing felt good to Melissa. She liked the feeling of warm hands petting her backside.

Soon enough Melissa was sound asleep, cuddled up into a tiny ball. Her mother covered her with her flannel blanket and silently walked out of the room.

The next day Melissa woke to find she was home by herself. She started to panic at first thinking the worst, but then remembered that her mom said she could stay home from school that day. Melissa looked over at the clock; her jaw practically fell to the floor, seeing it was 10:30.

“Wow! It’s really late” She had never slept passed 7:30 in her life! She got herself some breakfast from the kitchen and sat down to watch TV. She took the TV controller in her hand and pressed the button “On” She looked at the television strangely as she saw a black and white catlike human in front of her.

“Melissa! You must come back!” the creature screamed.

Melissa fell all the way back in her chair making her head hit the floor surrendering her unconscious. The darkness surrounded her but she could still feel herself spinning becoming dizzy. Then she was drowned in a pool of nothingness.

>^..^<

She woke in the same environment from her dream: the strange junkyard. She stood up hearing the whispers again, but this time, more clearly.

“ Is that her?” an innocent female voice spoke, “It can’t be”

Melissa looked at herself; her arms were covered in black fur with white patches covering parts of her body. She felt lightheaded again as if she were going to faint.

The owners of the whispering voices came out one by one, silent as if stunned by what they saw. Melissa herself was stunned, for they all looked like cats but stood on two feet like people. She then saw a familiar black and white face peek out from behind a heap of garbage.

“Did it work?” he asked in his lovely, handsome voice.

“Why, yes Mistoffelees, it did work?” said a sweet looking old shabby cat. This cat, later known as Old Deuteronomy, stepped toward Melissa, “Welcome back Malaysia!” He gave her a huge hug. Melissa stood frozen, not responding to anything. She was frightened out of her mind.

The black and white cat that she now knew as Mistoffelees ran up and nuzzled and licked her cheek. “I’ve missed you so much my love” Melissa didn’t know what else to do but blush.

“Where am I?” Melissa (Malaysia) asked looking around becoming more and more at ease with her surroundings.

“Why, your home at the junkyard, with your fellow Jellicles.”  Mistoffelees answered her with a worried look on his face. “Don’t you remember any of this? Your home? Your friends…Your mate?”

“Am I supposed to?” With that short question she got thousands of stares and w worried glance from Mistoffelees. “ I’m very sorry, but I don’t remember any of this.” Melissa looked a little disappointed in herself. Everything was silent for a moment that seemed to last forever. “But I do remember a warm, comfortable room, with lots of pillows of bright colors and sheets hanging from the ceiling and….”

Mistoffelees interrupted her “Jenny! That’s your home! She is remembering! I guess it just may take a while” Mistoffelees smiled, very proud of himself.

“Yes Misto, I believe you are correct” Jenny said to him.

Misto then slunk to the shadows as a strange look washed over Malaysia.

Malaysia looked at Jenny, “Jenny?” Malaysia looked confused for a second “As in Jennyanydots? She’s the one, who cared for me…”she paused trying to remember more,” when my mother died” hr smile suddenly turned into a frown as she remembered her former family. Out of nowhere she suddenly screamed “MACAVITY!” tears started to stream down her face dampening her fur.

Jenny ran up and embraced her in her arms. Malaysia held on tight crying from the emotional pain she was going through. Jenny stroked the back of her head, trying to sooth her fears. “It’s alright my daughter. Jenny’s here”

Malaysia lifted up her held to look up at Jenny. “Thank you so much. I love you so much.” A weak smile came over her wet face.

Then she remembered that something was missing, what or rather who was it. She backed away from Jenny, another memory coming back to her. With a confused look on her face she looked past Munkustrap to the black and white cat behind him. “Misto?” she whispered in a soft angelic voice. Misto crept out of the corner with a slight smile on his facing hoping she’d remember. “MISTO!!” She ran to him and hugged him tightly, nuzzling and kissing him as he did the same. “I’ve missed you so much!” Tears of joy streamed down her face, happy that she was now home.

Munkustrap looked to Old Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy nodded and Munkustrap started. “We welcome you back young Malaysia.  We will leave you two alone now.” Munkustrap motioned for everyone to go back to their homes so the two could get reacquainted.

Misto and Malaysia sat in the open of the junkyard for what seemed like an eternity staring at each other. Finally, Malaysia broke the silence “Misto, why is this happening?” she asked with a worried look on her face. She looked as if she were about to cry.

Misto touched her face so gently with his paw and rubbed his cheek against hers. “All will be explained in time.” He looked passionately into her eyes. “I’ve missed you so much. I know it only been a few days but…”

“DAYS?! A few days? It’s been a few years Misto. I was human! I was 14! That’s 14 YEARS!” a brief pause was held, Misto looked startled and frightened, “I’m a cat,” she said with disbelief, finally grasping onto the reality of what was happening. She quietly sat down staring out into space not knowing what to think. “What happened to me. Why can’t I remember anything? Misto, please tell me.” She began to sob, tears streaking her glowing fur.

Mistoffelees looked at her trying to think of what to say to help her understand. “Mala, I had to do it for your safety. I loved you and didn’t want you to get hurt.”

“What did you do, and why would I get hurt?” Malaysia asked, calming down as she looked into her friend’s eyes. She pat the ground closer to her, asking him to come nearer. Once he did so she leaned up against him, needing the support and the body warmth. “Start from the beginning.”

“Well, it was the Jellicle Ball, our first, it was our turn to become adults.” Misto looked at her to see if what he was saying was getting through to her. “Everything was going great! Everyone was singing and dancing and have the best time of our lives. Until he showed up!” Fire grew great in Misto’s eyes, “That devil ginger cat! Macavity ruined everything! He came to take you from us, take you from me. He wanted you as his own, but I couldn’t let that happen. I loved you too much. We started to run to get away from him but one of his Hench rats hit you over the head making you go into unconsciousness. But before he could take you away I zapped him with my magic, picked you up and ran behind the old tire. I kissed you good bye and sent you into the human world so you’d be safe. Since he couldn’t find you he stole Old Deuteronomy. I planned to bring you back that night after we’d killed Macavity but bringing back Old Deuteronomy had used most of my powers so I had to wait till they regenerated. While they were I was doing all I could to get you closer to home and trying to give you messages along the way.” Misto finally breathed, trying to get that out was hard on him since he really didn’t want to remember that night. He looked up at Malaysia, still in shock of the whole deal.

Malaysia stood up holding Misto’s hands bringing him to stand up. She looked up into the young magician’s eyes. “Misto, I remember it all! I love you with all my heart! Please forgive me for going crazy like that,” Misto smiled as he lifted the smaller queen up into his arms and kissed her lovingly. He carried her to his den and lied her gently on his bed.

“Before anything else happens,” Misto kneeled in front of her, “Malaysia, will you take me in you life forever, and become my mate?” He gulped hard in the silence, looking at Malaysia’s beautiful green eyes.

Malaysia just stood up not saying a word and suddenly hugged him with all her might. “Misto I love you so much I could never say no.” She kissed him and they lied together on the bed. His paws slowly traced every curve and hill of her form, making her shiver with delight.  He pulled her closer to him embracing her lips with his and shared the passion they had both been waiting for since they’d first set eyes on each other.  He cupped her chin with his delicate fingers kissing down her neck, arousing her purr to come on strong. She ran her hands down the his spine and tickled the base by his tail, triggering his purring as well. With their purrs combined to form one, Misto gave Mala the best gift a mate could give to another. Life!

>^..^<

The sun rose over the enormous stacks of garbage that lined the junkyard making for a brilliant scene. The rays hit Mistoffelees’ and Malaysia’s den slowly waking the two very young lovers.  Malaysia pulled one of the many rags on the bed over her head so she couldn’t see the light. Misto laughed at her attempt to stay asleep but licked and nuzzled her to wake the sleeping beauty.

“Come on darling, it’s the beginning of a glorious day and we have to spread the news of us! This calls for a very exciting day” he nuzzled her once more and began cleaning her face.

The young queen yawned “Okay, okay, I’m up.” She smiled dazily looking at her mates messy coat and began to clean him as well.

After about an hour of cleaning each other they were finally ready to spread the good news. They ran out of their den fully energized, feeling like the kittens they used to be. They laughed and pounced each other.

“Jenny, look at them” Jellylourm whispered over to Jenny “they are so cute together. They look so in love it’s amazing!”

Jenny sighed thinking about when she had first met Skimbleshanks, “Yes young love is the best time in any cats life” The to early birds looked at each other and chuckled softly to themselves as the sat on the hood of the car sunning themselves.

Mistoffelees had Malaysia pinned! They were both breathing hard but not feeling a bit out of energy. They purred in unison and nuzzled. “Shall we go spread the word?” Misto asked a dreamy queen. “We shall”

They stood up and walked over where they saw the two motherly queens sunning. Malaysia jumped on the hood and nuzzled her adoptive mother. “Good Morning mother” She smiled.

“Good morning sweetheart, and where is Misto?” Jenny asked with a slight smile on her face.

“Right here Aunt Jenny” Misto said as he jumped on the hood nuzzling his Aunts hello. “Well, we have some good news! Last night me and Malaysia became mates!” Misto said with a cheek to cheek smile his face turning a slight shade of red.

“Well this is great news!” Jelly said “Jenny and I’ll spread the news as soon as possible” Jelly pulled Jenny’s paw and they ran around yelling to everyone the wonderful info.

“That was the idea,” Malaysia said after they’d ran off. Smiling to herself, she sat sunning herself smiling at her mother and aunt’s giddiness over a matter like this.  She lied her head back when she jumped, feeling something “kick” her stomach.  “Misto, what was that?” she asked her mate very confused.

“What was what?” he asked concerned.  “Something kicked me” She said.

Misto didn’t know what to do. “Aunt Jenny! Aunt Jelly! Come quick!” The two elderly queens ran over as soon as they heard Mistoffelees’ cries for help.

They had arrived just in time as Malaysia doubled over a slight pain in her stomach. “What’s wrong with me?” Jelly sat down beside the tiny queen, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder, while Jenny took Misto aside. “Mistoffelees, by any chance, did you and my daughter have “relations” last night?”

Misto’s face turned a shade of red not even a tomato could get. “W……..we..we may have done something of that ssss..sor…sort” he stuttered not knowing if he had done something wrong.

As soon as he had gotten the last word out Jenny’s face lit up. “Jelly! No need to worry”

“What?” Malaysia looked confused. “but this can’t be normal! I’ve never felt this way in my life.” Malaysia looked as if she were going to fall over.

“My daughter” Jenny ran over to her “these feelings are normal for….. an expectant mother.”

Malaysia fainted at the sound of “expectant mother” her stomach pain forgotten.

Misto fainted at the thought of him being a father. Leaving two young kits fainted on the hood of a car. Jenny and Jelly laughed with each other and picked them up bringing them into their den and lying them down.

Misto awoke to the feeling of Malaysia’s tongue cleaning his face.  He smiled a dopey smile and finally snapped out of it. “I’m going to be a father” Malaysia smiled looking at him. Her green eyes had a certain sparkle to them as she looked at her mate.

The moment was interrupted by Rum Tum Tugger.  “Knock! Knock!” he said pretending to knock on a door that wasn’t there. “Well, I just wanted to congratulate you Misto. You got the girl this time.  And what a girl she is. Oh yeah and congrats on the litter.” Rum Tum said as he hugged his young friend.

“Thanks pal. It means a lot coming from you. I mean jeez out of all cats I get picked before THE Rum Tum Tugger” Misto laughed as Tugger’s mane fluffed up. It took a lot for him to come in here and say all that and now Misto was laughing at him.  Misto saw what he was doing to his friend. “Hey I’m just kidding with you buddy. No need to get your fur matted.”

“Okay, well I’ll seen you two love birds later then” Tugger said as he left there cozy den.

It went on like that all day. Cats coming in and out of they’re den congratulating them on everything. The two felt like their heads were spinning. Everything was happening so fast. But as the day wore on they got used to all the new attention.

2 Months Later

“Okay dear, now when I count to three I need you to push. 1…2…3! PUSH!” Jenny screamed to her daughter.  Malaysia pushed with all her might and screamed her lungs out in the process. “AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Misto! I hate you!!!” She screamed and screamed till it was all over and she had three beautiful kittens nursing by her side. She breathed a sigh of relief.

Outside Mistoffelees was pacing back and forth in front of the door jumping at every scream of pain wishing he could be at her side.

“Misto?” Jelly whispered. Misto nearly jumped 10 feet being startled back into reality. “Oh my! Misto you can come in now.” Jelly laughed at the new father.

Mistoffelees ran past Jelly and to the side of his queen and kits. A tear fell down his cheek as he looked at what they produced. Malaysia was sound asleep, tried from delivering three kits. “They’re so beautiful” Misto whispered to himself as he curled up next to his mate and kits.

A few months later

It was morning, once again, Malaysia woke to a kitten pulling on her ear. “Come on Momma. I want to go play outside.” Malaysia looked up to see a gray and black kitten on top of her. “Janaster, it’s too early sweetheart. Please go back to sleep” Malaysia said as she rolled back over to cuddle up with Mistoffelees.

Janaster obeyed his mother and snuggled back into the group of sleeping kittens squeezing in between his sister, a pure black female named Eclipse and brother, a white and black spotted kit named Makel.

About an hour later they were all up and grooming to get ready for a new day.  Malaysia licked her daughter’s head grooming her hair. “Momma! Stop, you know it’z goin to just get messyed uped again” she giggled as she ran outside to go play with the other kittens.

Malaysia sighed, ‘It seems like they were just born’ she thought to herself as Misto snuck up from behind her and nuzzled her back. She purred with delight as she turned around a smirked at her mate. “I’ll race ya outside!” she laughed as she saw the startled expression on Misto’s face when he finally snapped out of it he ran after her and pounced, rolling into Munkustrap’s feet.

Munkus smiled down at the two “kittens” as he still called them, although they were only a little bit younger than he was.  He laughed at their playful antics.  Misto lay on top of Malaysia and looked up at him with a kittenish grin. “Hey Munku. Uuummmm…… what’s up?” he said trying to put on his cute act.

Munkus smiled looking at them and then gave Misto a knowing look, “Now don’t you try to start that ‘I’m all sweet and innocent’ act on me again. I’m sharp now, I can spot it coming a mile away!” Misto smiled and put on a hurt expression.

“Who said it was an act?” Misto’s head snapped down to face Malaysia. “It was you, wasn’t it?!” he mock screamed as he tackled her once again, forgeting about Munkus and the others watching them. Mala gave a scream of “terror” as he play fought with her.

In a dark corner of the yard a pair of putred green eyes, watched the two in hatred. Macavity growled low to himself. “Oh, Malaysia. I will have you for my own. And you will love me, even if I have to beat you!” He cackled powerfully, loud enough for the entire junkyard population to be stirred by it.

Mala gasped as the vile laugh reached her ears. All movement stopped as she ran to Misto for support. She cringed as the sound stayed in her head. A single tear drop fell to the ground of her and Misto’s feet, as he soothed her by rubbing her back and whispering gentle words into her ear. “I’ll never let him have you, Mala. You’re mine and no one can every take my love from you.”
