The Tucson Sugar Skulls were a 2019 expansion franchise owned by Kevin Guy. Following the inaugural 7-7 regular season, the Sugar Skulls made the playoffs and fell at the hands of Sioux Falls in the first round of the playoffs. Following the COVID-19 cancelled 2020 season, Dixie Wooten was hired as head coach and general manager. Tucson went 6-8 and missed the postseason. Daquan Neal quarterbacked the Sugar Skulls in 2022 and passed for 2,342 yards, 50 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Carrington Thmpson led all receivers with fifteen touchdowns, while Arther Jackson snagged twelve and Quinton Pedroza eleven. Mike Jones posted 718 rushing yards and an astounding 37 touchdowns. With a 9-7 record, the team entered the playoffs and fell at Northern Arizona 49-30. The team returned in 2023, quarterbacked by Ramone Atkins. He threw for 1,983 yards, 37 touchdowns and eleven interceptions. Carrington Thompson, by far, led all other wide receivers, bringing in 24 touchdowns on 86 catches. The team went 9-6 and again qualified for the playoffs, but fell in the first round to eventual champions Bay Area. The 2024 season saw Tucson take a step back, going just 2-14. Eight losses came by seven points or less, including a 21-20 defeat at the hands of Duke City. A bright spot on the season with Mike Jones' rushing touchdown and two point conversion in overtime to beat Vegas 51-50 at home in overtime. Despite remaining competitive all season long, the Tucson offense only averaged 35 points per game, while allowing 45. Mylik Mitchell spent the most time at quarterback, passing for 933 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven picks. While the team averaged 105 rushing yards per game, the passing game was similar, never really able to take off. Nineteen interceptions were thrown by Tucson QBs. Mike Jones, Dev Sapp-Lynch and Mitchell combined for over 1,000 rushing yards and 36 rushing scores. Mike Carrigan led receivers with 636 yards and four scores. Brian Smith hauled in nine touchdowns.
