The Buffalo Destroyers were one of the least successful New York franchises in the AFL. The team managed only one win in 1999. In 2000, the Destroyers were almost a fluke of a playoff team. Going 5-9 in their division was enough for a playoff spot. They did win four of their last five, however, including two overtime wins. They played at Arizona for their first-ever playoff game, but lost 41-34. 2001 was not an improvement, as the team failed to post a winning season, again. The Destroyers lost their last five games, including an 87-48 drubbing by Nashville. In 2002, another sub .500 record was good enough for a playoff spot. The Destroyers finished at 6-8 and then lost their only other playoff game to Orlando. The team failed again in 2003, going 5-9 and the franchise moved to Columbus.
