This is the Grave of Private Thomas A. Dunbar Company I , 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known by their nickname, “Birney’s Zouaves”. He was born in Columbia,PA in 1838. He was the son of Thomas B. and Elizebeth Dunbar. In 1860 just prior to the Civil War he was employed as a Mason and living in Columbia. After being recruited at a local recruiting station in Columbia, he made his way to Philadelphia where he was mustered in at the Schuykill Arsenal on September 4th 1861. His younger brother, Robert S. Dunbar was also in the Same Regiment and Company. On September 8th 1861, he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C, where he was encamped just three miles north of the Capitol on “The Queen’s Farm” at Camp Graham . He was there with the Regiment during the cold winter months and in December of 1861; Typhoid Fever broke out within the Camp which resulted in the Death of Fifty-One men of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. It was decided on March 12th 1862 to move the camp to higher ground in Bladensburg, Maryland to rid the epidemic and ready the Soldiers for campaign. The 23rd Pennsylvania moved to Bladensburg and were encamped at Camp Clark . He was mustered out of Service on September 8th 1864 after the completion of his three year term. After the War, He returned to Columbia.He was married to Sarah Jane Bennet Dunbar, widow of Thomas Bennett of the 5th PA reserves (34th PA), who was mortally wounded at the Battle of south Mountain on September 12th 1862 and died sixteen days later. Thomas Dunbar died in Columbia on May 29th 1877 at the age of 39. He is buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery in Columbia in Section B.
The Grave of Private John Cristy, Company I, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves". John was born in Columbia,PA in 1841. He enlisted on September 1st 1861. On September 8th he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C. for the defences of the Capital against possible Rebel Invasion. The 23rd was encamped at "The Queen Farm" owned by Jacob Queen and they made Camp Graham thier home. Typhoid Fever broke out in November and December of 61 and over fifty men of the unit died forcing them to move to higher ground near Bladensburg, MD. There they established Camp Clark .He was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 1st 1864. He served his three year enlistment and was mustered out of service on September 8th 1864. After the war he returned to Columbia PA. He died there on November 12th 1885. He is buried at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in The Donegal Section, Lot 56, Grave 6.
The Grave of Corporal Jacob F. Albright, Company I, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves". Jacob was born in Columbia,PA on June 1st 1842. He enlisted on September 1st 1861. On September 8th he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C. for the defences of the Capital against possible Rebel Invasion. The 23rd was encamped at "The Queen Farm" owned by Jacob Queen and they made Camp Graham thier home. Typhoid Fever broke out in November and December of 61 and over fifty men of the unit died forcing them to move to higher ground near Bladensburg, MD. There they established Camp Clark . He served his three year enlistment and was mustered out of service on September 8th 1864. After the war he returned to Columbia PA. He died there on February 3rd 1926. He is buried at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in The Shawnee Section, Lot 609, Grave 9.From the Hill where is grave sits, you can see the Susquhanna River and The Wrightsville/Columbia Bridge.
The Grave of Private George H. Seifred, Company I, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves". George was born in Columbia,PA in 1839. He enlisted on September 4th 1861. On September 8th he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C. for the defences of the Capital against possible Rebel Invasion. The 23rd was encamped at "The Queen Farm" owned by Jacob Queen and they made Camp Graham thier home. Typhoid Fever broke out in November and December of 61 and over fifty men of the unit died forcing them to move to higher ground near Bladensburg, MD. There they established Camp Clark .He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 1st 1864. He served his three year enlistment and was mustered out of service on September 8th 1864. He reenlisted and Served with the 82nd PA Company H for 9 more months being mustered out on July 13th 1865. After the war he returned to Columbia PA. He died there in 1879 as a result of his wounds at Cold Harbor. He is buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery in Section C near the Masoleum.
Grave of Private B. Fryberger, Company A, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves". On September 8th he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C. for the defences of the Capital against possible Rebel Invasion. The 23rd was encamped at "The Queen Farm" owned by Jacob Queen and they made Camp Graham thier home. Typhoid Fever broke out in November and December of 61 and over fifty men of the unit died forcing them to move to higher ground near Bladensburg, MD. There they established Camp Clark .Not much is known about this soldier since his name never showed up in Bates History of the Civil War. Perhaps he was one of the few unassigned Soldiers.He is buried at Mt. Bethel Cemetery in Section A behind the Masoleum.
