The grave of Sgt. William Cole of Company L, 23rd PA. He was mustered into service on August 18th 1861 in Philadelphia. At some point during the war he was wounded and died of his wounds on May 29th 1864. He is buried at Alexandria National Cemetery in Virginia in Section A Grave 1959.
Grave of Pvt. J Weaver of Company R, 23rd PA and Company I , 61st PA. Pvt. Weaver was musteredinto service on September 1st 1861 in Philadelphia. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness as a member of the 61st PA, and buried at The Wilderness Burial Grounds. After the war The Wilderness Burial Grounds were removed and the remains were taken to Fredericksburg National Cemetery. He is buried there in Grave 3187.
Grave of Pvt. Madison B. Moss, Company I , 23rd Penna. Vols. Madison was mustered into service on August 20th 1861 in Philadelphia. He was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, VA on May 31st 1862 and discharged on a surgeons certificate. He returned to his home in Lancaster County,PA. He died in Paridise,PA in 1901 and was buried at Hopeland Methodist Church , in Clay Township. The Hopeland Methodist Church in on North Clay Rd. His headstone is in the old section of the cemetery up on top of the hill in the back with the trees as a backdrop.
The Grave of Corporal Matthew Spence of Company C, 23rd PA. He was mustered into service on August 2nd 1861. Promoted to Corporal on June 1st 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd 1863 and again at Cold Harbor on June 1st 1864. He was mustered out of Service on September 8th 1864.He was born on December 13th 1842 and died at the home of his daughter in Wilmington , DL on September 7th 1930. He is buried in Section E at Mt. Salem Cemetery in Wilmington Delaware. The Cemetery is located off of Route 52. It is Matthew Spence's head which is on the 23rd Pennsylvania Monument on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg.
Grave of Pvt Hugh Sterling of Company K , 23rd Pennsylvania. He was mustered into service on September 6th 1861. He died on February 24th 1902 in Wheeling West Virginia. He is buried at Cemetery in Wheeling.
Grave of CaptainWilliam W. Ellis of Company L , 23rd Pennsylvania.William W. Ellis was born in Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1840. He was educated at home and entered the army on April 16, 1861. Mr. Ellis enlisted as a private for three months, served his time and returned as acting quartermaster. According to the 1881 History of Montgomery County, he raised a company and joined Birney's Zouaves. Mr. Ellis was wounded in the shoulder at Fair Oaks and again at Fredericksburg in 1863, where he suffered a wound to the loin and a compound fracture of his left leg during the famous charge of the Light Division, (61st Pennsylvania regiment). Known as the "Boy Captain" due to his youth, Ellis gave up his captaincy, voluntarily, for first lieutenancy, but was promoted for bravery at Fair Oaks. Ellis also took part in the battles of Williamsburg, Savage's Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam and South Mountain. After being wounded at Fredeurg, Ellis was taken to Washington, where he was transferred to the "veteran reserve corps," by order of the president. He remained in service until discharged in 1866. In 1870 he moved to Villisca, where he owned the grain elevator. He was elected Colonel of the Fifth regiment Iowa National Guards in April, 1880. Col. Ellis was also a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges of Villisca. He married Maggie Sleppy in 1861. They had four children: Arthur, Emmor,Walter and Maude.
