She was born on 31 July 1865 in Butler County, Pa., the daughter of Henry L. and Elizabeth (Ziegler) Boyer.

Samuel grew up during the Pennsylvania oil boom and became an "oil well pumper". He worked on the "railroad" in Canada and in other western states before marrying.

Sadie began working as a "domestic servent" for other families when she was around 12 years old. She was slightly handicapped by an injury to one leg, that resulted from a jump or fall from a wagon when she was a young girl.

Samuel and Sadie lived near Kaneville, Venango Co., Pa., where at one time he pumped an oil lease on a farm owned by a family called Hanna. His wages at that time were $30.00 a month.

The family moved to Rouseville, Venango Co., Pa., about 1907, at which time Samuel bought or built a house on the street near the Methodist Church and Parsonage.

In 1909 he moved his family to Oblong, Crawford County, Illinois, arriving there the Saturday before Easter to follow job opportunities of the oil boom.

In 1910 the family was residing near the crossroads hamlet of Dogwood near Oblong where Samuel was pumping an oil field.

Thereafter the family moved on to other oil camps, spending a winter in a tent at Nowata, Nowata County, Oklahoma and a summer in Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois.

They returned to Rouseville, Pa. around 1914, but soon moved back west to Robinson, Crawford Co., Illinois. Around 1922-1923 they settled in the vicinity of Cushing, Payne Co., Oklahoma. In 1925-1927 Samuel took a job with the Deep Rock Oil Company on the Cimarron River operating a pumping station that fed water to the refinery near by.

In 1937, at the age of 77 years, Samuel was still operating this pump station, working 12 hour shifts.

Samuel and Sadie returned to Oblong about late 1937 or early 1938. He did not have any retirement pension and worked despite various oil field injuries, including two broken arms until the age of 80 years.

He always maintained some savings and was financially independent, in fact leaving his children $1,200.00 at his death. They had six children.

Samuel died on 16 August 1941 and Sadie died on 1 September 1960 in Oblong where they both are buried.
