Elin's Amerika

(The Story)

"A few days later, while Elin was gathering ferns for Moder to wrap the fresh butter in, Lamefoot parted the leaves and stepped quietly into the clearning where it had been burned over and the ferns grew thick and soft."

"See how soft the butter is!" "Moder wrapped the wilted ferns around it and carried it to the spring."

Set in 1648 along the banks of the Delaware River between Fort Christina (Wilmington, Delaware) and Tinicum (Delaware County, Pennsylvania), Elin wishes for other girls her own age as friends. The story tells of Elin's everyday life in a struggling colony whihc is mostly forgotten by Old Sweden.

The story happens over a period of about a year where people wait for a ship to bring supplies and new colonists from the old country. During this time, the cycle of the seasons continues, Elin learns about plants that heal and create colorful dyes, works with neighbors to make lye soap, goes to the newly built church which was built with the skills of each male colonist. Elin meets Governor Johan Printz and his family who actually governed the colony during its brief existence under the control of Sweden. She portrays St. Lucia in the Swedish Yuletide celebration and enjoys the Swedish traditions at Christmas.

When the ship finally arrives, it brings her brother and at least one other unexpected surprise which convinces Elin that New Sweden is actually "home."
